Families who have their holidays ruined by long flight delays will at last be able to claim compensation.
A landmark ruling has opened the floodgates for hundreds of thousands of claims, and could cost airlines millions. It demonstrated that Britons have the right to compensation of up to £480 ($758), plus expenses, for holdups longer than three hours.
Last October, the European Court of Justice ruled that delays caused by airline failures, such as technical faults or a lack of flight crew, merited compensation. This week, a judge in Staffordshire implemented that decision for the first time. He awarded a former teacher and his wife £680 ($1,074) after their flight home from Tenerife with Thomas Cook was delayed by 22 hours.

What idiots! Ticket prices are going to go through the roof or flights will be cancelled creating even bigger headaches in other areas because equipment is not going to be there for those flights.
Sounds nice, but all of us will pay this by higher fares.
The problem is the number of gates is fixed. If there is a backup, you cannot create more gates.
I know it is an inconvenience. If the airlines would pass out free drinks and order a dozen pizzas, there would be no problems.
Flush toilets
The article says it will “cost airlines millions”
It’s going to cost consumers millions is what they should have said.
It's a good way of curing congestion - ticket prices will rise, and passenger traffic will fall.
I already skip London when using frequent flier tickets. Taxes on a JFK-LHR RT is a ridiculous $645 on a FREE ticket. JFK-CDG (Paris) is under $100. Guess where we’re going?
Say “hello” to stratospheric ticket prices, consumers!
What a stupid ruling.
Gee, every time I’ve been delayed because of a mechanical problem, I’ve been thankful that the problem was found before the craft was airborne.
If there’s a mechanical issue, I want the mechanics to take however long they need to properly fix the problem, not be under pressure from beancounters to finish in time to come in under a 3-hr waiting time for passengers.
They will just overestimate flight times (2 hour flights will take 3-6 hours).
I had a number of flights that were over an hour late for take off arriving “ahead of schedule” stateside.
problem is often there’s no gate open to bring the plane back to, they don’t sit vacant for long.
You are being sarcastic, right?
Curing congestion would mean more airplanes in more places and more travel options.
Higher airline prices means higher prices for for everything that is deliveried via air. If a company pays more for employees travel that price is passed on to the product sales and eventually you and me.
A lawsuit and subsequent regulation leaves hinders competition which results in no choices in air travel and higher prices for eveything.
Just hoping you were aware of that.
I was being serious. The impact will be to raise air fares, thereby lowering passenger traffic and congestion at the same time. Economically-speaking, it's not efficient, but since when have judges concerned themselves with economics?
“Economically speaking, it’s not efficient”
contradictory to
“it’s a good way to..”
Your logic does not confirm that additional judicial regulation leads to lowered congestion. Neither does the court ruling. It only leads to higher prices for everyone for everything.
