Most Over Rated Musician

Posted on 04/05/2013 7:20:30 PM PDT by MNDude

There are a lot of lousy musicians that are a lot more popular than they deserve, but in you opinion, who are the three most over rated musicians (or groups) of all time?

All of them are - along with all other entertainers and celebrities. We've turned society upside-down. Centuries ago, music and entertainment used to be something which happened in the background or on the sidelines, while most folks were primarily interested and involved in some productive activity. We used to idolize those who succeeded the most in these productive endeavors, and we used to look askance at most of those who chose to dedicate their lives to a generally unproductive and frivolous pursuit like music. Only the extremely talented musicians used to receive our praise, an even those rarely became rich.

So yes, who's the most overrated - they all are!

but there would not be a Zepplin if not for Humble Pie

Hard to really see how that's possible since Led's formation precedes Humble Pie by at least five months. Even harder to see since Zeppelin was primarily a blues influenced band in the beginning, and their later work shows no influence from Humble Pie, nor, to my knowledge have any band members ever claimed that any ever existed...

I agree on Mariah. I have seizures, and her voice is the type of thing that makes me literally feel ill.

As to underrated, I was listening to Vera Lynn lately. LOVELY voice. She really should be a household name in this country.

Before Helen Reddy and “I Am Woman,” there was Ms. Lesley Gore and “You Don’t Own Me.” This also from the great T.A.M.I. show. I love the ‘do, the look, the class, and the talent. I love those sixties girls!

I looked at over 200 posts and can verify that Freepers do have taste in that no one said Van Morrison.

Humble Pie was a spinoff from The Small Faces (of Itchycoo Park fame). I think Frampton was with them for the first few albums before he went solo.

Yes, Songs in the Attic is great, blows away the studio version, especially Miami 2017.

Didn’t make them great musicians, just a group that collected a cult following.

Other examples would be groups such as Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, Insane Clown Possie, Phish, Primus to name a few. All had (and have) great cult like followers and yet were not great musicians.

I still have yet to find anyone who will actually admit to liking Nickleback, so who is buying their albums?

The only song by them I ever heard was "RockStar," - How many people can you identify? - which is pretty cool, especially the video. Watch it on YouTube, then find the parody video "PopStar," which is a total hoot!

Unbelievable that no one has mentioned Lady Friggin' Gaga yet. The worst ever. All gimmick, no musician.

Whoever said Led Zeppelin should be shot.

I won't comment on Lady Gaga because I've never heard her.

One Led Zeppelin's most popular recordings is "Stairway to Heaven," but I like this version a lot better:

Stairway to Heaven--Neil Sedaka (1960)

I know Humble Pie quite well, saw them several times in the early 1970's, including at The Filmore East. They were a fine band, and IMHO a much better live act than their studio albums would lead you to think.

But my point was, Led Zeppelin does not owe them anything.

I can understand why some folks don’t like RUSH. However, the fact that this thread is about OVER RATED Musicians - Rush hardly qualifies - as they were never over rated.

RUSH - the world’s most popular cult band!

Bruce Springsteen.

Who named him the Boss?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

We may hate his politics, but he was the finest songwriter/poet of his generation, hands down without question. He saved rock and roll in what was a very dark era for the genre.

In his prime he was unparalleled as a performer.

If anything he is underrated.

And yes, Frampton was a founding member of the band.
