McDonald’s fails to boost sales with Dollar Menu

McDonald’s managed to eke out a higher profit for its first quarter even as the world’s biggest hamburger chain failed to lift sales with its Dollar Menu.

The company said Friday that an important sales measurement fell 1 percent during the period and warned that it’s expected to dip again in April.

That marked the first quarterly decline in a decade in sales at restaurants open at least 13 months and underscored the troubles the company has been facing.

As Burger King and Wendy’s have stepped up their marketing over the past year or so, McDonald’s has responded by aggressively touting its Dollar Menu and other value deals to hold onto customers in an industry where imitation is rampant. …

I am not a huge eater, the kids meal was just the right size, and the toy went into the Sunday School program.

But I too quite buying them when the tiny box of FF's and apples were subbed I can't eat apples unless I want to be sick.'

Besides the new fry oil made the FF's taste funky.'

Since when did the first woman (I refuse to call her a Lady, you have to earn that title, and she has not) become a ALLERGIST? or a Nutritionist? Last time I looked she is I believe a disbarred lawyer.

Who probably fed her 2 girls lots of 'junk food meals' as she was so busy being a community organizer, rabble rouser and a lawyer.

Keep listening to her McD's and you will go bankrupt. Just give parents choices, and let THEM make the choice.

I now take my business to BK better burger and fry, and I can get lemonade as my soda drinking is very limited. Coffee sucks though as does ice tea in any eating establishment no mater whether high end or low. They don't steep it long enough to mature the flavor.

Maybe because McDonald’s is a distant fifth place in fast food burger chains behind Steak n Shake, Wendy’s, Hardy’s and even Burger King.

The last sandwich I ate there could not be chewed. It sort of mushed in my mouth. I eat there maybe twice a year.

Crap for only a dollar is still a dollar for crap. BINGO!!! The processed crap that McDonalds pedals is not something that people need to eat very often. Perhaps the customer base which averaged the highest average ticket is beginning to figure this out. When that happens, they are left with customers that average $2 to $4 per order and sales will tumble. The dollar menu, IIRC, used to be intended as a loss leader - to feed the $5 to $8 tickets filled with more profitable items on the order. Now they are making the $1 menu a profit center. Think about how lousy the food quality has to be in order to produce it for under a buck?!?!

The dollar menu works for me - the double cheeseburger for a buck may not be the best burger, but the value is great.

The McDonalds around me are horrible. The food is cold. Sometimes the meat tastes funny. The tables are never really clean and the garbage usually is full. The only time I go anymore is if I’m with my young nieces and nephews and sometimes I only get a drink. Perhaps the quality varies by region but for me, price is not an issue. I’m not going to pay even one dollar for garbage.

Maybe i do MacDonalds once in a while for breakfast or for a drive thru smoothie. Their coffee is pretty good usually. Anything to do with their burgers is junk— and all fast food had become overpriced. Jack-in-the-Box is dog food.

Not being snotty, but just curious. Did eating there cause you to gain weight?

Not even close to true if you shop the perimeter of the supermarket and stick to fresh produce, dairy, meat, fish, eggs, and nuts.

Now if you wander into the frozen food section and processed food aisles, then you are pretty much getting what you get at McDonalds.

I prefer to allocate a much larger portion of my budget to food. I would rather pay $10-15 a pound for fresh fish or quality steaks in a butcher shop or quality supermarket than to get something off the dollar menu at McDonalds.

Tale of two meals: My wife and I went out to dinner with another couple to a high-end five-star steak restaurant. The ribeye I ordered was $48 and it was one of the cheaper entrees on that menu. It wasn't bad but drinks, appetizers, desserts and tip included, the meal came to just around $500 for the four of us.

Fast forward a few months later and I did the same type of meal with the same couple. Only this time, I did it at home on my grill and got top-of-the-line steaks from the butcher shop which put those other steaks to shame. We also had asparagus, corn on cob and wild rice along with two bottles of good wine and my wife even made a cheesecake for dessert. Total cost was only around $150 and everybody raved about how much better the meal was than that restaurant we paid $500 at. Plus we didn't have to get dressed up.

So eating at home is much, much cheaper than eating at restaurants and you can prepare food yourself that is much better.

Yes. I don't understand how people can eat that junk. Dead taste buds, I guess.

I think they’ve found a way to pulverize potatos in bulk add a little sawdust or whatever, and then form them into compressed “cut fries”. Maybe even adding the step of compressing the stuff into a generic potato and cut it so there are little wedge pieces....I don’t know, but it wouldn’t surprise me based on what their current “meat” products look and taste like.

Back in the 60’s, the fries were cooked in beef taro lard,
and they used real meat. What made the burger taste so great was the dehydrated onion and sour pickle chips.
About 3 weeks ago I went into a McD’s and ordered a big mac.
When I got it it didn’t even look like the pic on their product board... I returned to the counter and asked to have a burger that looked like the one on their board...They laughed at me.... I said If you can’t give me the product that you advertise,I want my money back.

Did they give you your money back? That might be a way for customers to tell them financially that their food is crap.

Yes they gave me my money back.... Then I went to Sonny’s B-B-Q and had the best burger ever! And by the way... the McD’s fries were cold... I really hate that!

You want to ask for “just pulled”. Make sure you watch them come out of the fryer and not be mixed in with the other cold fries that have been sitting there for an hour or two.

If you are in the drive through, refuse to “pull over” and wait for something that should be available automatically.

I’m not a fast food junkie but Wendy’s sea salt fries are much better. And Culver’s and BK sweet potato fries are to die for.

“They gave out coupons like crazy last December. $2 Big Macs, etc.”

Yeah, around here they were doing two for one big macs, which finally enticed us to try some again after probably 15 years of not stepping into a McDs.

The big macs were HORRIFICALLY AWFUL! Dried out, puny, juiceless, tasteless. My question is: Were big macs always like that and my tastes have simply changed, or did they used to be good and now they are not?

“Ha—maybe they can use new 3D printers for home delivery!”

Faxed food could hardly taste much worse than the crap they serve in their “restaurants”!

Re: “Weight Gain”

I'm exempt, mostly by good luck, but some work.

My family DNA is perfect - everyone is slender.

Plus, I'm a lifelong runner, which I enjoy, except for bad weather days, and the occasional injury.

I'm 63, eat at least 3,000 calories a day, any food type I want, as much as I want, and never gain a pound.

Running only burns 1000 calories, so the rest is metabolic magic.

I truly sympathize with the average man and woman who gain weight just by watching the Food Channel.

But old age chops down everybody, no matter how health conscious.

I've got A-Fib, white hair, my skin sags around my middle, and I've clearly lost muscle mass in my upper body in spite of a lifetime of push-ups.

Nobody ever wins an argument with Father Time!

“Virtual Meals”

That's the story on just about all food these days.

They take the sugar out, they take the fat out, they take the salt out, they take the cholesterol out, they take the corn sweetener out, they take the gluten out, they take the carbs out.....

I hate to cook, but the ready to eat stuff from the store is completely tasteless and unsatisfying.

I think part of the obesity issue is that most “quick food,” no matter how many calories, gives you no sense of being full, no matter how much you eat.

We got the sausage mcmuffins on the $1 menu last week.

Great deal for $1!

We're going to go back and buy ten and stick them in the freezer for later.

Maybe this is why they're losing money on the dollar menu?
