I don’t disagree with you. All I was pointing out was that a) there are colleges out there that don’t fit your description and do provide a higher education that is useful (check out Hillsdale for example) and b) that one really does need additional training or education beyond high school. If you chose not to send your children to a college campus there are perfectly good distance learning opportunities that can fill the bill.

I would remind you that isolating will not change anything. We have to be able to interact and deal with the larger world. Part of the way that Christians do a very good service by being examples to those who are not yet part of the body of CHrist

“Perhaps if you don’t like what you’re reading here you should send Eric Holder and Janet Napolitano out to re-educate me. Tell them to look for the trailer with the cross on the door.”

What in the world did I reply that got your knockers in such a twist?

You are on point here, and it’s exactly what I have witnessed with so many of the high school kids who are forced to participate. The school provides a list of places that have opportunities to volunteer and put in your hours. It’s unfortunate in that I believe volunteering is a great way to give kids a broader sense of their place in this world and how one can do so much, but to place this as a requirement to graduate in essence, did the opposite.

I distinctly recall the _resident making comments to the effect that people would be ‘required’ to volunteer, or something to that effect. I recall thinking ‘wow’, how are they going to force people to do that?! I should go dig that up, only because it stands out in my mind so clearly.

that one really does need additional training or education beyond high school.

Why is it a given that women have to work outside the home? (I am in no way opposed to women studying and even mastering a subject area as many FReeper women have -- Just asking why it necessarily has to lead to employment. Did Mary have an office overlooking Main Street Nazereth or wherever?).

I would remind you that isolating will not change anything.

It will not change "out there" but it will prevent us from changing to match.

Part of the way that Christians do a very good service by being examples to those who are not yet part of the body of CHrist

It was nice when that theory could be applied without fear of persecution. Now it won't be long until you have to go underground as a Christian or risk the worst.

I believe they passed a law in his first term which would permit the government to require citizens to volunteer.

They would force people to “volunteer” like any other totalitarian country would — with a gun to their backs.

Thanks, I still haven’t gone back to try and find it, too busy watching hockey!

Didn’t it include something to do with seniors, meaning those over 55 not high school seniors. It stands out in my mind since I recall looking at my Dad who is turning 90, and thinking: what are they going to try and make him do?!

It might have. Obama probably wants to make elderly people “give back” in return for their generous medicare and social security checks (even though both they and their employers were forced to contribute).

I’d say those are very important lessons that should be driven home.

Inspite of what you may think not all women marry. There are women who need to work to support themselves. We do not live in a 7th century society the way the islamo nut jobs do. Nor do we live in a solely agrarian society that would allow women to merely be part of the homestead. Even in the 1800s in this country women worked outside of the home if they were single (even if they lived in their parents household).

“It was nice when that theory could be applied without fear of persecution. “ And when in history was that??? No where that I can see. From the earliest of days Christians have been persecuted ( and far worse than what we see in the US). The Middle East today persecutes Christians by slaughtering them. If we chose to isolate and avoid our responsibilities the outcome is by our own hands not that of the persecutors. “Good” Christians avoided so much in NAZI Germany that the likes of Hitler came to power. They could have stopped him had they only tried.

Hiding my head in the sand does not make a problem go away.

“ And when in history was that???

50 years ago, in this country and others, and at other times. Incidents of serious persecution of Christians were few and far between, and certainly not state policy (although Catholics, at various times, have encountered such).

There are women who need to work to support themselves.

There are, but most married women work because their family has become slaves to mammon, materialism, and the family across the street. Two incomes are not necessary to live, only to "keep up".

The Middle East today persecutes Christians by slaughtering them.

It does, and that happens in India as well, but persecution of Christians in the U.S. is occurring primarily at the hands of secularists and militant atheists, sanctioned by a government policy shaped by humanism and liberalism, not another religion (except for isolated major news events).

And I think you are off base blaming Christians for the rise of Hitler, although I realize you generally make good points on many threads.

I believe that the country is past the point of no return, and into the End Times scenario, and this calls for safe shelter of my own family and assets, not heroic trying to "make things right again".

BTW, sorry if you felt singled out or harangued this morning or last night or whenever it was; I quite literally had a reaction to a new medication and this has only settled out in the last couple of hours. Although looking back over my comments, I do sincerely mean the things I said, but perhaps they were too front and center and gave the impression of being targeted at you for some reason (although I was really ranting against contemporary society)..

I am of an age that I know a time when marriage was valued, most women stayed at home and took care of their children. I have made no claim that their should be two income families (I stayed at home and raised my child). After the divorced me, I HAD to go back to work to support myself and my child. I was fortunate to have an education and a career (prior to being a mom) to fall back on.

I know that you think that you can guarantee what life will be like for your children but you cannot. I suspicion that you probably do not have any personal exposure to higher education. You completely ignored my mention of places like Hillsdale College which do a wonderful job of educating and strengthening our young people. And you skipped over the distance learning options offered by many universities.

Christians through out history have always suffered persecution. Just because you lived in an area that seemed somewhat neutral does not change that. Read some Solzhenitzen if you want to see what life in the 20th century was like for Christians (and others) in the Soviet Union.

You lack knowledge of the rise of Hitler in Germany....Christians (and others) had plenty of opportunity to stop his rise. Instead they stood by and turned a blind eye.

And not to worry I did not feel harangued or picked upon. I enjoy a good conversation and discussion. Your points have been heart felt. And the truth is you and I agree on more than what we disagree on.

I suspicion that you probably do not have any personal exposure to higher education.

B.S., MBA, Doctoral work, Neuropsychology, completed all but dissertation; A- average in classwork.

Read some Solzhenitzen

I have read Solzhenitsyn, and made no claims one way or the other about persecution of Christians in other particular countries.

Christians through out history have always suffered persecution.

Of course, That's why I selected a particular period and location when there wasn't much (at least not blatant, or threatening of religious liberty in a meaningful way. That's changed now -- the "Arlene Florist" case is in my own town (the nearest town)).

Christians (and others) had plenty of opportunity to stop his rise.

It wasn't always clear to people what was happening (early on) and in any event, that's hindsight. In fact, a butterfly could have flapped its wings somewhere and prevented Hitler from being born at all. Read about catastrophe theory. And if you are so keen about Christians proactively stopping evil movements, get out there right now and stop every last abortion in your city effective tomorrow morning. After all, more innocent lives have been lost that way than anything the Nazis did.

I am tired from the medication side effects and won't be able to post more today. I concur that we actually agree on most things but with a difference in emphasis. You seem to be more optimistic and hopeful about the future than me which probably is a laudable Christian orientation).

I cannot sot EVERY abortion even on a really good day. It is like the star fish on the beach. I cannot save everyone. I can however save at least one. And I do the best I can on any given day to stand in the gap.

I am glad you have the education you have. I think education is a wonderful thing for every one. I am also glad that you are as well read as you are ( too many today are not).

Sorry about the struggle with your med change. That can be frustrating as all get out. And yeah I guess I am an optimist. I don’t know that I am optimistic because of my Christian faith. I do know that in the past I was a very hardened cynic and learned the hard way that happiness is a choice. I try and live each day as though my life has meaning and value (and I think many do the same) and I sense that you do to.

I thank you for the conversation. All too often it is easier to just devolve into nastiness. Your responses have been thoughtful and insightful. Thank you for sharing your time with me

Our daughter in law had the same deal to get into med school.

I guess they were making sure she’d be willing to work for free under Obammycare before letting her in the club.

You’re right. Yet some of the kids have a hard time and others try to cram it all in in their senior year! They actually have an office specifically dedicated to this requirement with postings for opportunities and the forms they need to have completed to get credit.

That’s about right. It did not improve my feelings towards my fellow man in any way as it was assumed to do.

I did learned that it was impossible to correct a child’s language skills when he went home and learned ebonics from his parents nightly.

I was doing this when I was 16,17,18. I had many things on my mind other than service to others. That’s another reason why I got nothing out of it.
