SAN ANTONIO -- A father was tazed by San Antonio police while trying to save his infant boy from a house fire.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday during a house fire in the 100 block of Morningview Drive.

Investigators said the parents of the eight-month-old boy had dropped off their children at their grandparents' house. Somehow, a fire got started inside the home shortly thereafter.

The grandparents managed to grab one boy and rush to safety. That's when they realized one boy was still trapped inside.

Emergency crews and the children's parents arrived on the scene at around that time.

The boy's father tried several times to enter the burning home, but police held him back and ended up tazing him. SAPD said it was for his own safety.

The infant died from injuries sustained during the blaze.

Arson is under investigation. Police said the stories just don't add up.

No criminal charges have been filed.

The family is now looking for a new place to stay.

There is nobody you love so much that you would not risk your life to try to save? OK Spock.

Truly ironic considering the ending of Star Trek II.

Too much of the necessary information is missing to make a good judgement regarding the degree of risk the father faced in entering to rescue an infant son...

Light smoke conditions? Heavy smoke conditions? Smoke with some fire showing? Structure totally involved in flames? Collapse imminent? These are some of the factors firefighters assess in deciding to enter for fire attack and search/rescue, or go defensive and protect adjacent structures...

Firefighters assess degree of fire involvement, along with condition of the structure, its remaining structural integrity, contents, and location of the person to be rescued (if known) when making that call...And it’s the fire incident commander’s call to make, not a cop’s...If the structure was totally involved in fire when crews arrived, then no entry may have been possible...

But IF it’s true family and emergency crews (firefighters?) arrived on scene at the same time, that begs the question why were firefighters not entering to rescue the boy, IF they had any information he was still inside? If the firefighters were told a kid was still inside, did not enter to search and rescue or attempt an interior attack, but went defensive instead, then the father’s desire to try to rescue his son is very understandable...

A cop stopping a father from rescuing his own child because the police officer decides it’s too risky is a decision above the cop’s pay grade, and outside his area of experise...

38 years a firefighter, a cop would have to shoot me if my kid was inside a burning structure...

It looks as if the police and emergency crews prevented the father from entering the home while at the same time refused to attempt a rescue themselves. I can ignore their cowardice in refusing to use their publicly funded training to bear any risk themselves. However, their refusal to allow the father to attempt to save his infant son is inexcusable. In my opinion, the father would have been fully justified in using lethal force against those preventing him from attempting to save his son.

I’m glad we never had kids, or have ever had a fire .. not sure how I would have reacted,, but I would probably try to save my neighbor’s kid or grandkid or my own if we did..

Sad, there are no guarantees on what may happen,, regardless the facts tho, neither the kid or the father were able to exercise self-determination in that instance.

Sometimes being part of a ‘civilized’ controlled society is just not an easy thing. Prayers to the father and family.

Why did you or anyone choose to have kids? Because they are an extension of you into the future, hopefully, beyond your own mortality.

I understand that some say it just puts more lives at risk but also would ask what they would do if it was their child?

Maybe they ought to find another job if this question unsettles them.

You’re absolutely right. It’s really, truly much more important to let babies die than violate rules.

Absolutely, based on the fact he might have been able to save his own kid. They'll never know, will they?

Ya got to love controlling government and their agents.

Many agents of the government become drunk with power...They get heavy badge syndrome. Anyone challenging their commands, even trying to save your own child, are subject to electrocution, beating and or death.

This isn’t your parents America.

It's a logical development. Given the power of tasing, the police are, by doctrine, prohibited from any sort of physical engagement with a member of the public. The first recourse after verbal exhoration is the taser. So, that's it right there.

I guess in the event none of them had a taser, they would had to have shot him...

Since he was disobeying a command by government agents, did they arrest the father who was attempting to save his kid?

Disagree. First lesson of a fire - if you are out do not go back in.

Are you suggesting it’s the motivation of cowardice to follow this rule?

Real life is not the movies. Sure, it sounds great to run in there and try to save your kid and get back out - but if you run in there and die how does that help anyone?

I have two younger brothers. I have had to look after them since they were small. Both my mother and my father would have excoriated me for ever going back inside in a fire for any reason.

Get the hell out. Get away from the fire. Do whatever you have to do to get out. If it means jumping out the top window and breaking a leg - break the damn leg.

That was our rule with a fire. Don’t look around for anybody else. Get the hell out. Worry about the rest of it - once you are out of the house and safe.

You are not superman.

Does not compute!

What you mean, ( I assume, ) is "There is nobody you love so much that you would risk your life to try to save?" See what I mean? Or you could say, "Is there no one for whom you would risk your own life" ... and like that.

Or you could say, "Would you not risk your life to save anyone?" See, "anyone", in this case. The cold heart of grammar!

"Truly ironic considering the ending of Star Trek II."

I thought it was a bit strange myself. But maybe the person posting this only saw the JJ Abrams version, not the real, original Wrath of Khan.

In any event, the needs of that baby outweighed the desires of the nanny staters. I pray for that family to forgive and find peace.

I would have tazed the guy myself. Don’t care how he thought of me afterwards.

He could hate me forever but I would taze him if I were that cop. He could put me up for performance review and have me written up take me to all the papers and I’ll say the same damn thing.

“Why did you taze him”

To save his damn fool life.

You do not run into a building that’s on fire once you are outside and safe.

And if they took this guy to court, I’d acquit the cop on day 1 and hang the jury if necessary. His job as a cop is to let some damn fool kill himself out of grief? No his job is to save his damn fool life.

Bull sh*t...I personally ran into a nearly fully involved house fire when I was 20 years old, as the "First responders" just arrived and I grabbed an elderly women who was still collecting things to save and somewhat forcibly walked/pushed her out.

Stop with that BS.

YOU WERE THERE? YOU SAW THIS WITH YOUR OWN EYES?

Worrying about what I thought of your narrow ass after the fact would be on about page 60 of your worries if you Tazed me.

To finish this, the homeowner female was hosing down her son on the front lawn, who’d been severely burnt while working on his car in the attached garage, gas fire, she was screaming, “My Moms still in the house”...Home nearly fully engulfed at that point. So I went in and got her.

That lady might have never made it out, if I had not ran in and grabbed her. I just happened by on my Harley at 20 years old,....So stop with your first responder BS script.
