The University of Dayton is giving 100 students free bicycles in exchange for their promise not to bring cars to the southwest Ohio campus for two years.
The Dayton Daily News reports the giveaway is part of the university's efforts to shrink its carbon footprint and form a bike friendly campus. It also builds on a bike-sharing program created at the school two years ago.
Almost 300 first-year students have promised to ditch their four-wheeled vehicles for two years. A hundred of them will get bikes Friday at the grand opening of the school's new Outdoor Engagement Center. The bikes retail for more than $600.
The recipients include Cody Rice, who says not having a car forces him to spend more time on campus and make the most of it.

Not too many good jobs for college graduates but not to worry!!! We are making sure their head are filled with green BS
How do you take a girl on an interesting date without an automobile>
Wow. Just wow! This will save the country.
Maybe in our day a car was needed.
Now they send each other pics of their junk on smartphones...
I predict a lot of stolen bikes.
Next they give them shoes for the bicycles then when the shoes wear out they are barefoot. Unless they find an old tire and make a pair of “Charlie thousand miler” sandals.
It doesn't work even during a fundraiser.
I had a bike on campus at one of the colleges I attended because there was only parking near the dorms. The buildings that houses classes and labs were in the center of the campus - the dorms around the outside, then parking lots outside of that.
Oh I don’t know. Taking her on a thrill ride in between faster cars seems pretty interesting.
In 1968 I was attending the University of West Florida. I had a car but I lived in an area which allowed me to ride a bike without getting on a highway at all except crossing one time.
I would just lean my old Western Flyer against a tree on the edge of campus. I got kicked out of school a few weeks later for poor grades.
I drove by campus a few months later and there must have been 50 bikes right where I had started leaning mine. The whole time I was there my bike was the only one.
A few years later I came by again and they had bicycle racks for probably a hundred bikes. I haven’t been back in many years but I really did start something there even if I only last two quarters.
"Ya peddle your legs off to give your ass a ride".
Still got one though;)
It was terrific. We weren't allowed to work either unless it was a campus job.
Not having distractions absolutely increased the quality and quantity of our learning.
...and Mr Rice at home paying the tuition just shi*
UC Davis (CA) is a huge bike campus. You’re almost frowned upon for not riding a bike or driving a Prius. I visit folks there and drive my 4x4 crew cab just to piss off the locals.
>>How do you take a girl on an interesting date without an automobile>
A date?? Kids don’t date anymore. A guy finds a random girl and she gives him oral sex. Then, he goes and plays XBox with his buddies.
These Skulls full of mush are being propagandized into being good little comrades to be down with the struggle/revolution and they don't even see it.
When I was their age I would have killed to get a GTO or some other fire breathing 4 barrel carb'd Detroit Monster. They probably think GTO means some group that is a "cause" on campus they want join.. Beam me up Scotty...
“Could be about Green...could be about parking.”
That was my thought. I think the “carbon footprint” thing is just how they’re selling this to their students, when the real reason probably has to do with limited parking spaces. When I was in college, the school did everything it could to discourage people from bringing cars on campus (bureaucratic nonsense to get a parking pass, limited hours in most parking lots, etc.), simply because there wasn’t enough parking capacity on or around campus.
When I went to UF in the early 1980’s freshmen couldn’t have cars on campus. If you were a commuter freshman, you could park in a dirt lot miles from your classes.
So, we all had bikes for school. And we had cars for the other 140 hours in the week. Nothing green in that. Stupid greenie feel-good things like this are an insult to Mother Earth! Liberals should be sterilizing themselves at age 18 if they want to make an impact.
Secret social experiment and the only guys who are doing this don’t really stand a chance at getting laid.
“Carbon footprint” is probably the dumbest term I have ever heard.
