Government shutdown & the USPS

Posted on 09/29/2013 8:16:23 AM PDT by A Cyrenian

Wouldn't the USPS benefit from a government shutdown? They would be off work so they should save some money during a shutdown.

Doesn't this sound correct? I know the libs will find fault with it but it makes sense to me.

For the benefit of the USPS & its employees, Mr. Obama shutdown the government.

I’m not sure about the long term, but at least for the immediate future the event of a shutdown, you’ll get your mail and your entitlement check. :)

USPS is not funded by tax dollars, it is separate from the rest. No pause in delivery.

That's 100% true.

And, like any corporation in America, when the money gets tight at USPS, they go straight to Congress and say, "We need a billion dollars."

In 2012, the USPS had its third straight year of losses from operations, which amounted to $4.8 billion. And you know they won’t go bankrupt. The mail will continue. They can lose billions every year — but, like any private corporation in America [/s] they will magically stay in business.

I worked for the USPS until 2 weeks ago. I was part-time with no benefits at 12.43 hour.

There are a lot of reasons why USPS loses money, and no one could rationally claim they couldn’t be more efficient.

Dems would not mind a short (2-3 days) shutdown, because they could turn that into a political goldmine for the 2014 elections.

Dems fear a long shutdown, because they fear many of their supporters might actually realize we don’t need many of those government agencies after all.

Pubbies fear a short shutdown, because they know they will get the blame.

Perhaps with luck the IRS will slow down as well? Although I suppose it is in the US interest to make sure we keep cashing incoming checks. As an aside, my accountant mentioned to me that given all the yo-bamacare related turmoil combined with the shutdown frenzy he cannot imagine a better time to for tax fraud. No doubt a lot of illegal immigrants will be filing returns with big refunds coming there way.

It’s a slowdown, not a shutdown.

The longer the better.

It will be educational for Americans, in a good way.

Most entitlement monies are now direct deposit or go to debit cards.

Considering that the USPS is forced by Congress to support government spending through excessive funding of future retiree health benefits, it would be only fair if they could notify Congress that they are short of cash. UPS, FedEx or any private corporation would also be suffering under such a ridiculous burden.

Permanently shut down public education and all federal funding to state and local governments. That would solve the debt problem and several other problems. Keep the Postal Service open, because unlike the others, it serves a useful purpose.

Yup, you got it right, unlike many freepers.

And if the USPS did shut down, we would go bankrupt in one week, as we are a mail-order cottage industry whose very existence is dependent upon being able to mail stuff to our customers.
