Kansas waiter not tipped because he's gay

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (KCTV) - What a customer left behind for a waiter in Kansas has ignited a social media firestorm.

The server found a message written on a credit card receipt telling him he would get no tip because he was gay.

When Dr. Marvin Baker heard about a gay waiter who had been wronged by a customer at the Carrabba's restaurant at 107th and Metcalf, Baker and his homosexual partner showed up for lunch to do their part to make things right.

"I was angry," said Baker. "I said this is not Christian as I know it."

"I said, 'We are here to meet the celebrity. The one who was mistreated,' and she said, 'That's my son. Would you like a table or booth?' I said, 'Wherever he's serving.'"

The 20-year-old waiter and his mother, who also works at the restaurant, say they did not want to make any comments about the hateful message a couple wrote on the receipt earlier this week.

The message started off with a complaint saying, "Thank you for your service, it was excellent." But then the customer goes on to say, "We cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to God."

Baker, who served as a pastor for many years and leads a Bible study group for LGBT members told the waiter this was unacceptable.

Yes, was this a staged event? Did it really happen?

How would he have known if he was gay if he did not say so? I cannot imagine the customer would have had any reason to ask if he was gay and I am skeptical of the idea that he was actually watching the waiter to see if he had a gay partner or something. If the customer actually asked if the waiter is homosexual, or watched to see if he was holding hands with another gay guy, than I would consider that absurd and morally unacceptable to not tip a waiter based on that.

That said, at best I highly, highly doubt that is what really happened. This has activist publicity written on every square inch of it.

Sounds 100% staged and a plea for attention.

Why assume the anonymous diner was a Christian? He could have been a Muslim.

I agree it's unacceptable. Oh, he's not talking about himself.

Diversity is our strength -- and in a really diverse society, some folks will express disapproval of homosexuals.

Deal with it.

My thought exactly! Sounds like a scam to make Christians look hateful and gays seem mistreated

In theory, yes, but 1. This is Kansas and it is not like NYC or Boston or Chicago or LA or even a typical large Texas city where Muslims are in particularly high concentrations at all 2. If he was Muslim, he would not only have refused to tip but also spend the whole meal shouting obscenities, throwing stuff at the waiter and maybe even trying to assault him, creating a whole lot of further publicity that would be very hard to ignore.

I’m old enough to remember when a waiter getting stiffed on a tip was not national news.

Agreed. It was on a credit card receipt? Not likely! It would have the patron’s name and the restaurant would have their credit card info. I know there are some stupid people in the world, but.......

I always get suspicious when people who intentionally do not live a Christian lifestyle tell the world what is and what is not Christian. "I said this is not Christian as I know it." ... If you don't know it ...
