First off, psychopath doesn't just mean someone who cuts you up with a chainsaw though the majority of people who do things like that are psychopaths. What is the definition?
Psychopathy is a personality disorder that has been variously described as characterized by shallow emotions (in particular reduced fear), stress tolerance, lacking empathy, coldheartedness, lacking guilt, egocentricity, superficial character, manipulativeness, irresponsibility, impulsivity, and antisocial behaviors such as parasitic lifestyle and criminality.
So which professions (other than ax murderer) have the most psychopaths? What about the least?
The next thing that comes to mind is probably, "Why?"
Most of the professions on the right require human connection, dealing with feelings and most of them don't offer much power. Psychopaths, by their very nature, would not be drawn to or very good at these things.
On the other hand, most of the roles on the left do offer power and many require an ability to make objective, clinical decisions divorced from feelings. Psychopaths would be drawn to these roles and thrive there.
That said
Chef? Really?
I guess it pays to tread lightly around anyone who has a set of knives bearing their initials.

>> require human connection, dealing with feelings ... Accountant?
Sure, most accountants are nerdy introverts (no offense!) but a few are extraverts. Do you know how you can tell when an accountant is an extravert?
No, but I’m sure you can tell me ...
Romney wasn’t my FIRST choice but at least he wasn’t NUTS.
The clown now infesting the Spite House is SLAP CRAZY as a CHIT HOUSE RAT!
An extraverted accountant, when talking to you, will look at YOUR shoes instead of their own.
:-) :-) :-)
P.S. I’m a software engineer — accountant and programmer are plug-compatible as the butt of this joke. ;-)
:-)
Sociopaths and Psychopaths are completely different, but I don’t feel like explaining for the 20th time on FR. Sorry... for my worthless response. Meh.
LOL! We used to say “An actuary is like an accountant, but without the great personality.”
being a psychiatrist is not a profession, it is already a diagnosis.
But people trust them with money. Life can be weird.
I like that one too! I’m adding it to my file.
We are nice.
It is just that the budgets as submitted need to be squeezed until their voices go up at least two octaves before they even come close to reasonable.
Nothing personal.
Must not count those that work at abortion clinics.
Psychopaths flock to jobs that allow them to control or exercise authority over others, and avoid jobs that require empathy or caring for others. Not really a big surprise.
His own prejudices may suggest why therapists and artists are in the least psychopathic column and clergy and police in the most psychopathic column.
Basically, if you have power and an audience and can play head games with people and get away with things you can be a psychopath and other psychopaths will want a job like yours.
There are some pretty screwed up accountants, beauticians, charity workers, and potter/weavers out there, but their screwiness takes other forms than psychopathy.
“Im surprised to see Psychiatrists and psychologists not on the list. I suspect a lot of people who pursue those fields are trying to cure themselves or at least understand themselves.”
Maybe, but psychopaths would not do well in those professions, because they don’t have much ability to understand other peoples’ thought processes or feelings.
Uncivil Servant perhaps?
That was my first guess.
I believe in Dr Hare’s book “Without Conscience” he said psychopaths make up 7% of the population. With this high of a percentage, there are bound to be some surgeons that are psychopaths.
This “study” is BS. It was debated a couple weeks ago on another thread. Why are politicians not on the list?
Its from a left wing womens site, so it favors all the jobs that would commonly be held by the audience of the site.
