Two quick-thinking men on Newfoundland's northeast coast managed to save a Greenland shark from choking to death on a large piece of moose hide this past weekend.
Derrick Chaulk said he was driving down a road by the harbour in Norris Arm North this past Saturday when he saw what he thought was a beached whale.
When Chaulk went closer to investigate, he realized it was a shark, which he estimated was about 2.5 metres long, and weighed about 115 kg.
The animal was still alive and had a large chunk of moose hide protruding from its mouth.

These sharks are used to make the one Nordic food more scary-sounding than lutefisk. From Wikipedia:
The flesh of a Greenland shark is poisonous. This is due to the presence of the toxin trimethylamine oxide, which, upon digestion, breaks down into trimethylamine, producing effects similar to extreme drunkenness. Occasionally, sled dogs that end up eating the flesh are unable to stand up due to the neurotoxins. Similar toxic effects occur with the related Pacific sleeper shark, but not in most other shark species, whose meat is often consumed fresh.[18]
However, it can be eaten if it is boiled in several changes of water or dried or fermented for some months to produce Kæstur Hákarl, often Hákarl for short. Traditionally this was done by burying the shark in boreal ground, exposing it to several cycles of freezing and thawing. It is considered a delicacy in Iceland and Greenland.

I know it sounds cold, but I always hate things like this. People praise the “saviors” but I feel like they make the animal population weaker by artificially saving them from their own mistakes. The weak and the stupid should die and let the fit members of their species pass on their genetics. Instead we treat them like humans where that sort of mercy is called for.

This is hugh, and series, and seems to show some humanatee. It should be FR law that you have to post a link referencing the famous thread from which this originated.

It is considered a delicacy in Iceland and Greenland. I sense that this could be one of the hot foodie trends of 2014.
