There are so many amazing science fiction movies that it's hard to include all the greats in a list of 50. It may not be the same 50 you'd pick, but I hope you enjoy this list of must-sees.

This sort of thing used to drive Harlan Ellison nuts (well, more nuts that normal) when the stores would lump his books in with the science fiction. So he labeled his genre "Speculative Fiction," which was really quite a good description. "A Clockwork Orange" could be labeled "speculative fiction" quite accurately.

I did not include Planet of the Apes because it looked like the remake, not the 1968 original. the original should be on the list.
As far as recent films, Wall-E should be on the list.
Silent Running was way cool

IIRC, the producers of Silent Running, with "Hewie, Dewie, and Louie," sued George Lucas over R2-D2.

Natural City was more scifi
opening scene was a woman factory, who knew they didn’t come with clothes?
District 9 reminded me of an SCTV bit from way back when; "They blowed up REAL GOOD!"

I agree with you about the Forbin Project, and in fact I thought about it a few minutes after I posted before. I only saw that one for the first time a few months ago. It was definately a movie that set a theme that would return again often in “skynet,” or “War Games.” I would also put War Games on this list before I would put a lot of others. Also missing is the Day the Earth Stood Still.
I had forgotten about “Invaders From Mars”. I saw it when I was around 6. It remained in my memory as the greatest movie ever until I saw it again around 1980. I was really disappointed.
I then saw it for the third time and realized it really was pretty good. I had simply made it so great in my mind that no movie could measure up.
The remake wasn’t awful but not even close to the original.

Very True! And also "The Island," with Ewan McGregor & Scarlett Johanssn.
Both were terrific movies.
