Complete Headline: Here comes polar vortex TWO: Just when you thought it was safe to go outside... another blast of Arctic air to hit US next week

If you live in the American Midwest or East Coast, you may want to hold off on putting away your winter gear.

Just as temperatures are beginning to warm in much of the U.S, another arctic blast in the form of a polar vortex appears to be on the horizon.

The upcoming front of icy temperatures is expected to bring arctic air to southern Canada and then move into the northern plains of the U.S. before moving to the Midwest and East Coast - each of which is still recovering from last week's frigid temperatures.

Those jugheads were putting away their "winter gear" in January? No wonder they're freezing to death. Not very bright. Somebody needs to purchase a calendar.

... hold off on putting away your winter gear.

Appreciate the tip, hub. But winter is just 3 weeks old; we have 9 weeks to go. I'll wait to see what Mr. Punxsutawney has to say about this in 11 days.

And yes I’ve worn a winter jacket to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in early May, LOL.

Thanks. Having lived in the Midwest most of my life, I needed a British newspaper to tell me that it was probably ill-advised to expect a heat wave in January.

We used to call it the "January Cold Snap." Often followed by the "February Cold Snap." But that was in the days before Al Gore ...

I’ve known about the polar vortex for many years.

I call it by another name, though.

Winter.

Aren’t February and March usually the coldest months?

Intellicast's historic averages page lists the lowest temperature days in Dayton, Ohio as January 19-22. On average January is the coldest month followed by February and December.

Oh yeah, because here in Michigan we always put away our winter gear in the middle of January....

January seems to be the coldest month here in se Wisconsin. February is cold and snowy too, but you start to see signs, although subtle (more sunshine, snow melt), that the weather is going to change. In March, temps begin to moderate gradually throughout the month.

The picture matches one from the Belle Isle ice tree in Detroit.

Doesn’t winter clothing start going on clearance in January? Walmart is already starting to get gardening supplies out (seeds, starter kits).

Thunder is not unusual in January north of the Gulf of Mexico which can supply plentiful warmth and moisture year round. There is nothing at all unusual about any US weather this winter other than a bit more variability. There was a lot more variability in the (globally) cooling 1970's where thunder would accompany both the warm and cold sides of blizzards (e.g. midwest blizzard in 1978).

Contrary to media myth that global warming causes storms or unusual weather, global cooling is caused by more storminess and unusual weather (if the storminess increases globally).

Burrr!!! This keeps up and I’m adding anti-freeze to my diet.

12 year old Jameson's Irish whiskey would be a good choice!

Is this “Polar Vortex” anything like the “Jet Stream” of years past that would “dip down” bringing freezing arctic temperatures.

Most of the country's temperatures will remain above zero degree - unlike the last Polar Vortex
Cities near the Great Lakes should expect lake-effect snow

You mean temperatures will stay above zero? For January, I'll take that. As for lake-effect snow, that's just normal weather for those parts.

Six months from now, in July, we are sure to suffer the wrath of KILLER HEAT WAVE!

Predicted highs to the next five days:

It is starting on about the sixth day that the temps cool somewhat. Around 34F high next weekend, nothing too out of the ordinary.
