Dick Hickock (one of the “In Cold Blood” murderers) took nearly 25 minutes to die at the end of a rope.

I was born and raised in Preble County and to this day I consider it home. May he burn in hell. Joy was a lovely person and suffered far more than he did.

Good. I’d like to see drop hangings again.

We could always go back to the “Lions Den” form.
A good use for stadiums in the off season AND the states could then justify public money for private stadiums by just saying the MAIN use of the arena is for public executions.
Of course, with each use of the stadium being carried on TV for those that can’t afford a stadium seat. (Make it part of the full season package) would also help pay for the facility.

Then again in the proper circumstances there is the good old ‘ant hill’ and honey routine.

I’ll work up some sympathy for the A-Hole in the future, if ever.

Britain's famous hangman, Albert Pierrepoint, prided himself on being able to manacle the prisoner, put him on the trapdoor, apply the noose and hood and spring the trap in as little as 30 seconds. With a noose properly positioned and the drop figured correctly death is almost instantaneous.

States should abandon these drug cocktails that require IV lines and can be unreliable and opt for nitrogen asphyxiation. The condemned is placed in a sealed chamber and a sufficient quantity of liquid nitrogen is introduced to displace the air. The gasping or struggling to breathe is not caused by a lack of oxygen, but by a buildup of carbon dioxide. In an inert gas atmosphere carbon dioxide continues to be expelled so the condemned simply looses consciousness and expires from lack of oxygen. Unlike previous gas chambers that used cyanide and had to have elaborate precautions to protect prison officials and witnesses from the deadly gas, nitrogen is harmless in small quantities so no elaborate gas chamber is needed. A simple room with reasonably tight doors would suffice. Liquid nitrogen is cheap, readily available and relatively safe to handle

Wow, that is a great verse. I wonder if Solomon meant that slow justice causes other criminals to see that they too can get away with it, or that people may scheme to do wrong by engaging in vigilantism?

After all, if there is no law and order, no justice; then ultimately citizens will have take matters into their own hands.

Or so I’ve heard. Wonder if that’s really true? Looking at America today and what the scum get away with; I guess vigilantism - like morality and public decency - is an antique and obsolete notion.

He gasped, snorted and took FIFTEEN minutes to die...

And I hope he was aware of what was happening to him the entire 15 minutes.

Bullish said: "Or just fill up his chamber with carbon monoxide and he just goes to sleep forever."

That's what I thought until watching a show recently which claimed that one of the symptoms can be painful abdominal cramps.

I would think the nitrogen might work well. I heard about a man who mistakenly plugged his air mask into a nitrogen source before entering a deposition chamber. He passed out and was removed from the chamber.

No cause was determined for his passing out so, when he sufficiently recovered, he entered the chamber again and passed out a second time. Only then was the mistake with his air line discovered.

I didn't hear that he suffered any pain.

Yeah. A proper hanging involves dropping a gate open under the prisoner, so he falls and breaks his neck. But sometimes they might accidentally—or deliberately if the criminal was thought to really deserve it—let them drop just a little, and then gradually strangle from lack of air.

The lead carpenter who built our house was born in W. Central Kansas. His uncle was on the Kansas Highway Patrol and was at the execution. He said Hickock had spent the previous two or three years doing muscle building in his cell. He thought he could beat the hangman.
His neck didn't break when the rope snapped but the order said “hang by the neck till you are dead.” It took him nearly half an hour to strangle.

One can scarcely conceive of a sequence of crimes more shocking to the conscience or to moral sensibilities than the senseless kidnapping and rape of a young, pregnant woman followed by her murder

That's really, really bad.

But someone who cannot imagine something worse doesn't have much of an imagination.

Also, what's up with the common use of the term "senseless" when describing crimes? Made all kinds of sense to the perp.
