Free Republic | March 28, 2014 | greeneyes

Posted on 03/28/2014 12:39:07 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Mammoth grey stripe sunflower have the most potential food. I had a volunteer grow beside my driveway, in a pile of rocks/crappy soil, minimal water. The seed head was 23” across and 99% viable seed.
Problem around here is bird competition.
Good thing about sunflowers, they are very vertical and can be interplanted with other crops. As soon as the soil warms enough for beans, I plant sunflowers. I will plant them every two weeks until August to keep a steady crop.
25# bag of grey stripe sunflower seeds from a feed store (bird food) is probably the cheapest way to get a zillion seeds fast.

I looked in your email to me and mine to you looking for the number of sunflower seeds you get from one sunflower. Let me look one more place to see if I can find that.

Pansies blooming, daffys too. Sowed seeds of parsley, rosemary, oregano and swiss chard a couple of days ago. Lily shoots poking through the ground. Rained today and more on the way. It never dries out so there may be a permanent lake near the building!

Here is mine. It's basically a block of magnesium (lightweight) with the striker on one side.

They don't come stock with the white mold/salts on them.... that's from age.

The striker is shown with a Leatherman(tm), case, and standard cigarette for scale.

The cigarette is of course, home made.

So do you remember the discussion? Or was that something I intended to discuss and actually didn't? Because that sometimes happens.

Does it have a gold "$" stamped on it? :)

My grandchildren are taught all of God's physics. They really like the cool stuff like levers (trebouchet) and the energetic reactions.

I simply teach physics. And the Constitution, and how freedom was won and may be maintained.

My daughter has taken to asking for my lesson plans.

What lesson plan?

I only grow tobacco. Even if Texas legalized growing any other smokable, I'm only interested in Nick O' Teen.

The local constabulary is familiar with what I grow, since I provide cat-nip for the animal shelter, and give away produce in the summer.

“I was really warm out there today; we both are exhausted. We just can’t take it anymore.”

I was in bad shape after I transplanted this last bunch of plants outside yesterday. So much sweat had to peel clothes off. Sweat in my eyes and I had to rest before I could even go shower. I was worn out and I also get worn out doing errands and grocery shopping. I need an assistant to do that stuff so I don’t have to.

Awesome.
We are never too young to learn physics.
Job well done, grandpa!

I do remember the discussion but I don't have that on my computer as I just looked, both in your/my emails and in my documents. I stick your emails in a folder with your name on it. I keep them in case I can blackmail you one day.

Today was mirror physics. Ricochet was obvious from setting up the indoor range. Radar corners got discussed, and then we did a field exercise with one of the bug-out-bag widgets that had a flash mirror.

They can now attract the attention of searchers miles away if they ever get lost in the mountains (we're on a slightly hilly plain). They can also find north, and ruin my hearing by blowing the survival whistle.

All you have to do to find those kids is follow the trail of busted and broken anvils. You'll find the kid with a rubber mallet at the end of it.
