Love it or Hate it: Where Do You Come Down on Kale, Beets, Okra, Brussels Sprouts and Cilantro?

Cilantro was described as an aphrodisiac in the Arabian Nights, but that fact fails to impress those who hate it with a passion.

Cilantro was described as an aphrodisiac in "The Arabian Nights," but that fact fails to impress those who hate it with a passion.

Julia Child famously told Larry King that it has a "dead taste," and she would pick it out of a dish "and throw it on the floor." The pro-cilantro crowd is just as vocal, if not as descriptive. You can find the debate anywhere you find cilantro and the people who meticulously pick it out of their food.

We explore the adoration and hatred of this herb, and some other divisive foods, in our latest edition of Love It, Hate It. To get started, we asked staff writers Joan Morris and Martha Ross to square off on cilantro.

I love beets and Brussels sprouts. I like cilantro and kale. I don’t really care for okra.

Kale, no; beets, yes; okra, hell no; brussels sprouts, yes (especially roasted); cilantro, yes in salsa only.

Kale, Beets, Okra, Brussels Sprouts and Cilantro

I love Kale & Beets pickled. That's the only way I've ever had them. Cilantro tastes great in fruit or vegetable salsa's.

Never had Brussel Spouts. They smell too much like cabbage when cooking and I just can't get past that smell to eat either of them.

Wife can make decent sauteed Kale, but it needs the bejeezus cooked out of it.

Beets - Meh, useless plant.

Sprouts, love them with vinegar, wife hates them.

Cilantro, what would Mexican food be without it?

Like everything except the brussels sprouts. Love cilantro. Put it on my salads along with Italian parsley and dill.

So, how about you? Do you have strong feelings about cilantro?

Tastes like soap.

How about these divisive veggies?
Okra

Yum!

Beets

Roasted they are OK. Not so fond of them pickled.

Kale

Put it right there between the corn bread and pinto beans please.

Brussels sprouts

I like em. In large quantities they do not like me.

Now let's talk about the really evil food. Green Peppers. Are they they food from hell or just an evil curse upon the world?

Okra, only used it in Gumbo, too slimey for consumption elsewhere.

Kale smells like sour rotten cabbage, but it’ll clean you out better than the best enema.

Cilantro is like Flo from the Progressive Insurance commercials. 50% of men think Flo is hot, 50% think not hot...

...50% of people like cilantro, 50% think it tastes like soap.

Flo=HOT! Cilantro=SOAP

Cilantro excellent in salsa.

I enjoy it chopped in salads.

I’d say Flo is annoying but cute, and works for a crony capitalist affiliate of the Obama regime.
