We filed in late March and got our Federal refund in mid April. That was six weeks ago and we still have to get our state refund. It's a very small amount, but it's OUR money, not California's. Is anyone else still waiting for a refund from the state of California?

Your first mistake is in thinking it is your money.

How selfish and mean-spirited to expect a tax refund...and maybe racist.

I mailed my California 540 on March 20 and I have not received my refund yet. I have been checking on the “where is my refund” site on the Calif. FTB website. I called California Franchise Tax board last week. They told me they have no record of my tax return. I have never waited this long for a tax refund. Today I went back to the “where is my refund’ site, and voila, my refund has been “authorized’ and I am supposed to have it within 25 business days.

If I had a balance due and had not filed they would be pounding me by now.

Ha! My mom didn’t get a refund at all, despite using virtually ALL of her income for medical care last year. Her mutual funds did well, so she had a big, fat tax bill. She died 5 days after I wrote the check to CA and to the Feds.

Meh, we have counseled both our son and one of his friends that you never have the govt, state or fed, owe you money!
Always owe them money...
The “refund check” you get for over paid taxes is interest-free use of YOUR money and the govt takes it’s time getting it back to you, if ever...
Just some unsolicited advice from a FRiend.

I hear ya my FRiend, but as someone who has been audited, I prefer to get a small refund rather then owe a small amount.

If you are in line for a refund, you obviously have way too much money.
Moonbeam will appropriate it for his choo choo train to nowheresville.

If you end up a with a refund in these days, put yourself on the other side of the IOU... apply it to next year’s taxes.

I had my California taxes done and emailed in before in end of February. I still have not received my refund. I went to a website two weeks ago to inquire. I website says I should still be receiving my money. I don’t understand why I have to wait so long. The IRS workers are protected by cloak of anonymanity plus an impenetrable fort of phone banks, and message carousels that go nowhere, or endlessly repeat and refer in a circular fashion. It’s like ,whose face do I slap?

Due to a lack of a few pieces of paper, we filed late just before 15 April. Our CPA filed on the internet, and we had our refund check in less than two weeks. We used it for a mini beach vacation.

If you don’t file electronically, you might want to consider it.

Also, never mail your income filings from your letter box or a post box on the street. Identity thieves depend on people doing that.

I have been doing my California State and Federal income taxes for many years using TurboTax. Up until 2013, I mailed in my returns, and I received refunds of both with 4 to 5 weeks. Last year and this year, I filed electronically. This year I had both refunds within 2 weeks. The bad news is that TurboTax charges $20 to file the state return electronically. There is no charge for filing the Federal return electronically but I noticed 2 or 3 years ago that once the “free” Federal electronic return was included in TurboTax, the price of the software was increased. Oh well, there is no free lunch.

Of course, you folks do realize that the Feds are not checking the data contained on those returns with the data filed electronically by employers, financial institutions, and others until AFTER they have processed the returns and issued refunds. As a result, there has been massive fraud by people who are filing returns in the names of other people like you and me, and then getting large refunds before the true individuals ever file their returns. Kind of makes one wonder why the IRS bothers requiring companies to file income on millions of individuals and then doesn’t check it against the tax returns they have received.
