he looks pissed off.

My guess is no teeth. People with no teeth are probably not big smilers.

In those days, looking pissed off in a photograph was the norm.

he looks pissed off.

You would be too if you'd been getting AARP junk mail since 1799.

“Heyer crossed the Delaware River with George Washington in 1776.”

You’d be pissed off too if you were running from the limeys most of the time.

“he looks pissed off.”

He’s thinking, “We should pick our own cotton.”

You'll be pissed off too if you live to 103.

On the serious side he looks pretty good for 103 and crossing the Delaware with Gen. Washington is a much bigger deal than being the earliest born person to be photographed IMO.

Back then people had to pose for a very long time for the camera to take the picture. On top of sitting long enough to be pretty annoyed he is also missing all or most of his teeth, which causes the caved in face look.

Getting your picture “struck” back then was regarded as a solemn, serious occasion. They’d no doubt think we all look like grinning fools in our photos.

This man had seen and experienced much. At the time that this picture was taken, I'm sure he was feeling the pains of aging, and his weary eyes reflect it. I'm glad I was able to view a picture of a Revolutionary War patriot.
