The investigation into how Bowe Bergdahl came to leave his base in Afghanistan is to start next week, after the Army appointed a General to lead the inquiry.

The two-star General, whose identity has not been released, will examine the events leading up to Bergdahl's departure from the base in June 2009.

Bergdahl, who was held as a prisoner-of-war by the Taliban for five years, finally returned to the U.S. in the early hours of Friday.

Completely ignorant of how the Army justice system works, but isn’t a general a bit “overkill” in terms of rank for this? Why not go with a major or a Lieutenant Colonel?

No ignorance there at all. I investigated a deserter (deserted from home port and not in time of war, so it was slightly less serious) when I was an O-3, one or two steps below your guess and a whole lot lower than an O-8. The only reason for choosing a general is so he will take the political ramifications into account in his investigation. We'll see if West Point's lessons on integrity stuck, or if self-interest wins out, but my guess is that the Community-Organizer-in-Chief is betting on the general's self-interest.

The “overkill” is due to, in my guess, that the entire “great publicity event” blew up like an A-bomb in Obama’s face. Also, the Army is saying “We are serious about this investigation.” Whether or not the behind the scenes political machinations is another thing.

There was an AR 15-6 investigation done by the command in Afghanistan at that time. This is now FIVE years later and Bergdahl is back in US custody, thus the need for a new investigation to examine what happened in the last five years. The original 15-6 investigation will undoubtedly be introduced as evidence for this new investigation.

You are correct. MG is WAY overkill. In more normal circumstances, this would be a O5 (Lt Colonel) or O6 (Colonel).

MG is normally reserved for when the accused is a field grade officer (04 through 06).

"The original 15-6 investigation will undoubtedly be introduced as evidence for this new investigation."

"We'd like to do that, sir, but the 15-6 was located on Lois Lerner's computer and is now irretrievably corrupted/lost."

"Very well, Captain. No sense going any further. Margarita party at the O-club at 1900!"

no offense meant general,
just cause you are a general doesn’t mean you aren’t up obammy’s ass and will play any tune he calls.

The commander in chief has already weighed in that Berghdahl is a hero that served with distinction. There will be no finding except that he had a mental breakdown. No officer will buck the CIC. there will be no court martial.
