GCI Celebrates 3G Data Service in Bethel with 6,000 Cheeseburgers

GCI celebrated the launch of 3G data service in Bethel by flying in 6,000 McDonald’s cheeseburgers. The Friday lunchtime crowd stretched out and around the parking lot of the Long House Hotel.

Standing over 100 people in line for burgers, GCI’s Vice President for Wireless Services, Dan Boyette, says crews are continuing to tweak the network, but it appears to be functioning as intended.

“All of those things that people really had trouble doing before like browsing the internet or sending pictures..that sort of thing will work fine now with the 3G speed, while it’s tough with the 2G or EDGE speed,” Boyette said. ”It’s a huge improvement and it’s something we want to keep doing throughout Western Alaska.”

GCI has invested millions of dollars over the last several years, including work to build the TERRA-Southwest fiber optic and microwave tower connection. Boyette says tests show phones getting 6 to 7 megabit per second downloads speeds. He says people who don’t have smartphones should see better performance because the old networks is seeing less demand from smartphones.

Bethel is 400 miles wast of Anchorage and has a 6500 foot paved runway, but no roads to anywhere else, and no MacDonalds.

Residents have been getting more and more frustrated with their wireless service, so GCI flew in 6,000 MacDonalds cheeseburgers to mollify the locals at the big opening day of the new service!

McDonald’s cheeseburgers suck to begin with and to feed them to people after hours in flight! WOW! What a way to pacify the mob. And, 6000 burgers for 100 people ... what’s with that?

Mayhap I’m reading this wrong?

I had only heard of Bethel because of the Bethel Dream Center (http://www.betheldreamcenter.com/bdc/Home.html).

I'm betting they arrived frozen and were warmed/cooked in Bethel in those quick MacDonalds ovens on site, just like your local MacDonalds does it.

But who knows?

Salad days for Bethel, AK. First Internet and now McDonalds hamburgers right on its heels. Who knows what is next in store for this rugged Yukon town.

We lived in Juneau for many years and when McDonald’s first opened up in the 80’s it was huge and there were people camped out in the snow overnight to get some mickey D chow. They had big mac airlifts to villages and other small towns in southeast Alaska until everyone finally got indigestion and the novelty faded.

That one closed a few years ago.
Now there remains the one near the airport.

They need to design the menu for the region. How does a well done Mc-Moose-Burger sound? or Grilled Otter-Breakfast Patties? I’d try some. Powered Donuts could be called Northern Snowballs.

McDonald’s cheeseburgers suck to begin with...

I agree. For the life of me, I will never understand why so many Americans think that the "food" that McDonald's serves is good. The only explanation is defective palates.
