The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I have an electric ice cream maker and it also uses salt and ice. However, somehow or other the last time around, I wasn’t able to get the paddles going.

The container was just turning around and around inside the the ice packed around it, but the paddles weren’t doing any stirring on the inside of the container.

100%! I’m in awe! Is the tomato tree in the photo one of those starts?

Thanks for the picture. My indoor peppers didn’t do diddly this winter either. Usually pretty prolific. C’est la vie.

We had our first regular size cuke today. Sliced it and some onion and put it into a near empty sweet and spicy zuke pickle.

Had salad with indoor cherry tomatoes, and the zuked cukes and onions and shredded Gouda cheese for supper.

Thanks for the links. I tried making my own, but they didn’t turn out. I think it was non viable seeds though.

Mr. Indoor tomato is just about kaput. Hoping the out door green tomatoes start to ripen soon.

Our Seascape Strawberries gone crazy in size. That is a quarter and a penny for comparison…

We have already picked about 4 gallons of average sized berries and then these appeared.

I dug and cleaned the Inchelium Garlic on the 20th and put it in the greenhouse to cure. I still have 4 other varieties to dig and clean. The bulbs are pretty normal for being badly infected with Rust disease …

Had to make the trip to the Big City (Rapid City) today, so that meant hitting all the usual stores: feed, building materials, the Sara Lee/Oroweat “used bread store”, etc.

While at Running’s, I heard some faint cheaping, and was surprised they still had chicks this late in the year. It was a single tub with white cornish cross broilers. I innocently asked how much the chicks were, since I didn’t see a price. We walked out with a box with 14 in it, marked “NO CHARGE”, and signed by the department manager. SCOOOOORE!

Last tomato seedlings went in this week.

The 2 types of Indian corn sprouted within 3 days of planting, and is growing fine; but the Golden Cross Bantam that went in Saturday still hasn’t penetrated the surface.

The white crowder peas I mentioned last week also sprouted within a few days, and all are up & looking good.

Did a final (I think) hilling on the potatoes; first flowers are opening. The potatoes in the tires got straw, and get a second tire tomorrow. Naturally, they are quite a bit behind the ones in the ground since they didn’t get planted until the others were already up. Sweet potatoes seem to also be doing well.

Still getting at least one, sometimes 3, thunderstorms 2 days out of 3 all week.

Been eating strawberries; and the raspberries look like we’ll get a decent amount.

What a good score on the chicks! Hubby’s corn is looking real good. Mine not so good. May have needed more nitrogen when I refurbished the soil.

Scrolling down the page, reading posts..when I saw the description and the pic, I immediately knew it was you before I even scrolled down to your name. Those are humongous strawberries, and as with all your produce, beautiful.

Thank you both for informing me.

I never researched their growing cycles, etc because I think I must have thought that they would never grow! But they did! I love daikon, but now that they have bolted, I’ll just let them do their seed thing so I can follow the cycle through. I’ll be really interested to see how big they got in their pot. They may have been cramped up. Or not! LOL! I don’t know what I’ll find, but it’ll be an adventure to find out!

Thanks for the encouragement! At least the okra and daikon and legumes seem to be doing something!

Can someone tell me how to harvest/maintain spinach. I expected the plants to bunch up but they are growing all over.

Cukes are almost 5' tall. Should I let them grow higher or stop them?

Actually getting squash fruit this year. Looking good.

I have grown zukes in every garden I have planted. And I have never had an overabundance of zukes either. I have usually planted 2 or 3 plants each year, this year only 1 plant has been planted.

Mr. Sg did Three Sisters last year so we had 12 squash plants per row (zucchini and winter squash). There was barely enough squash for another family and us.
