McDonald’s Has the Worst Hamburger in the Country, According to New Consumer Reports Study
New York Daily News ^ | Wednesday, July 2, 2014 | Chelsea Hirsch

The Habit Burger and In-N-Out lead the pack. Chick-fil-A also has lots to squawk about. Turns out nobody’s loving it.

The standard McDonald’s hamburger — the one that claims to satisfy “billions and billions” — finished dead last in a new Consumer Reports taste test.

The Hamburglar’s favorite meal earned a score of just 5.8 out of 10 from the magazine’s readers, putting it far behind West Coast chains The Habit Burger Grill and In-N-Out Burger, which scored 8.1 out of 10 and 8 out of 10, respectively.

The top fast food burger available locally was Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which got a 7.9 score from the 32,405 readers surveyed by the magazine.

McDonald’s said in a statement that it’s “proud to serve 27 million customers a day” — but the chain has suffered declining sales for six consecutive months. And Consumer Reports thinks it knows why.

“More and more, food quality - not just low price - is emerging as a deciding-factor for many Americans when choosing where to spend their dining dollars,” said Tod Marks, senior projects editor for the magazine.

By quality, Marks said his readers mean “the food’s flavor and fresh-tasting character.”

Even Micky D’s fans couldn’t really defend their daily bread (and frozen patty).

“The food (quality) depends on what McDonald’s location you’re at,” said Aravid Murali, an 18-year-old Brooklynite who dines with Mayor McCheese once a month.

Meanwhile, New Yorkers are waiting in line for the burger at Five Guys, despite a meal that costs several dollars more.

“I like that you can see them cooking at Five Guys as opposed to McDonald’s,” said Sean Daniels, 26, of Crown Heights.

McDonald’s did get a measure of revenge — its McGriddle breakfast sandwich beat Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco in a mouth-to-mouth test.

Still hungry for more? Breakfast and burgers weren’t the only thing on Consumer Reports’ menu. Midwest-based Portillo’s Hot Dogs was the best tasting fast-food chain with a score of 8.5 out of 10. And Chick-fil-A’s signature poultry sandwich earned a score of 8.

I guess you’re right about that. But I still see food products as a problem with that idea.

McDonald’s did actually have the best fries, something happened recently. They changed the oil or something and they taste like crap. Stopped going for my fry fix, just as well I suppose.

Thanks Moose.

I hear you. To me it’s just a matter of how the different brands meet the expectations of their market niche. That said, I’m chowing down on a Five Guys burger as we speak and it is truly delicious.

For San Francisco, that’s probably cheap.

OK, I bought a pack of Nathans Beef hot dogs today and will have a couple on the 4th. I haven’t cooked any in a long time. Any suggestions as to how to cook them the best and I don’t mind going to a little trouble if necessary?

Just kind of like shoe strings

They are fairly crisp, no special seasoning.

They have 3 choices of fries

Del Taco is still around. They do have good burgers, and their mexican fast food is way better that Taco Bell.

Portillo’s italian beef that's dipped/immersed in aus jus, with roasted green peppers...delicious! Love their hot dogs with everything, too. Hamburgers not so much. Love their full rack of ribs dinner w/baked potato & coleslaw..delicious and reasonably priced, as are all their products.

I love the 79 cent burgers also, but hold the cheese..tastes like plastic. They're priced right, the meat is juicy and tasty, not heavy & dry like the Quarter Pounder, and the chopped onions & pickle slices are delish. I stopped eating the Quarter Pounder because the burger was heavy, dense, dry and I had difficulty swallowing it.

"changed"

A year ago I bought a Big Mac at a local MickeyDs. It was the first one I had for about twenty years. It has shrunk so much over the years, they should call it the Little Mac.

Warren Buffet just bought the Portillo’s chain for $2 Billion......not bad for Dick Portillo, a man who started out with a little hot dog wagon on North Avenue in Villa Park, IL. He explained to my father-in-law, (who knew him when he started the business), that “his wife was angry because I take the mustard containers home and wash them each night in the bathtub - which leaves a yellow ring”. I’m sure Mrs. Portillo has several bathtubs she can choose from now....lol

Love the taste of White Castles..those square shaped & steamed beauties with chopped/steamed onions and just right buns & pickles. Juicy tasting and I savor each one as I eat them. There’s many a night I dream of a sack of those beauties, like we use to eat when my spouse was alive. We’d take a drive at night and stop at the Castle for a few & a sack to take back home. Brings back memories of my childhood and those burgers on the south side of Chicago.

McDonald's fries are tasteless. Love the frozen Oreida Fast Food Fries that I make in the oven at home better than all others.
