The CIA has claimed responsibility for various UFO sightings in the 1950s
They say lights over Norway can be attributed to their U-2 aircraft
The plane began flying in secret from 1955 and remains in operation today
It is capable of flying up to 70,000 feet, meaning it was much higher than conventional planes in the 50s and 60s
This meant that, when some pilots saw sunlight glint off the planes above them, they reported them as UFOs as they didn't know the U-2 existed The CIA discovered the misidentifications in 'Operation Blue Book'
One UFO expert is unconvinced, however, saying it is 'ironic' the CIA would reveal this on World UFO Day

Lemmie see if I got this. The sun reflected of a FLAT BLACK plane painted FLAT BLACK with a paint specifically formulated for maximum light absorbency... at 70000 feet... at night, and people mistook it for a UFO. Well of course it was.
I find the alien spaceship to be a more believable excuse.
Early U-2s were in natural aluminum. It was only years later they were painted black.

Thanks for the ping. Some of the high-altitude flashes of light might have been sun reflecting off U-2’s, but many UFO sightings are not compatible with this CIA explanation.
People get irritated when they expect to see it, but don’t.
