REVIEW: Halle Berry Stars in CBS’s Extant

This summer drama mashes up a lot of sci-fi premises we've seen before, but in a way that shows potential.

The first episode of Extant (CBS, Wednesdays) establishes with several quick cues that you are looking at the future. When astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry) washes up in the bathroom, she pulls up a news feed on the mirror. The garbage can outside her house is a transparent prism that compacts trash elegantly. Also, the show seems to posit an alternative universe in which CBS airs high-profile new dramas and they’re not about cops or lawyers.

That particular aspect of the near-term future has been ushered in by Under the Dome, the loopy but successful Stephen King adaptation that, now in its second season, has turned a small town in Maine into a menacing butterfly garden under glass. Now CBS is premiering Extant, a Steven Spielberg-produced joint about the eerie aftereffects of a long-term space mission ...

Spielberg was executive producer of both shows. He wasn’t a line producer, director, or writer.

As far as Terra Nova reviews go, the first few episodes got good reviews, then the show went downhill for a while, before finishing with strong reviews.

One of the key factors in the cancellation of the show was its huge budget.

didn’t she come out in favor of the “one-drop” racial rule, where one drop of black blood makes you black? The kind of thing an old south plantation owner might have come up with.

“Think of a female Samuel Jackson (shudder)...”

Any time she wants to know what’s in my “wallet,” I’ll be happy to show her...

Oh for crying out loud. She’s a 16-year old kid.

And please don’t give me that “well, the libs went after the Bush kids so it’s OK if we reply in kind” line.

When did I “go after” anyone? I just said I’m not going to watch it.

All I meant is that I am not going to watch the show, too many far leftists involved from the get-go.

Do you think everybody who fails to watch the show is slamming the poor kid?

No. Of course not. I don't plan to watch it either.

Actually, I think I’m gonna pass on it too. I’m not about to sit around for 10 boring shows for a cliffhanger birth of whatever the ‘baby’ will be.

My only guess would be is that Spielberg will work some social commentary or vision into the work. Frankly, I think he’s so 5 minutes ago, myself. Jumped the Shark.

Actually, she didn’t “work” on it. How could anyone “work” for just one day and call that “interning?” She was pandered to because of her father.

Actually, I liked the show. It had some promise. But, alas, I’m not in Hollywood’s key demographic so what does my opinion count?
