Census: Almost 10 million Americans changed race

Nearly 10 million Americans decided they would be a different race or ethnicity in the early 2000s, with the largest movement coming from Hispanics deciding which racial category they should be in, a new census report showed Wednesday.

People switched between races, moved from multiple races to a single race or back, or decided to add or drop Hispanic ethnicity from their identifiers on census forms.

Researchers said the information used—race, ethnicity, sex, age, location and how the information was gathered—is not particularly helpful for figuring out why people decided to make those changes. They noted that there has been a tendency toward multiple-race responses, and new census form designs may have caused some changes in how people respond to questions about Hispanic ethnicity. …

I assume that the census data is anonymized, and hence that the statisticians have made inferences based upon plausible scenarios - i.e., that they can't actually list the individuals who self-identified as, e.g., Hispanic at the last census and who changed that to a different ethnicity in the most-recent census.

I've never understood why any non-Hispanic White would choose to state his ethnicity. I would always boycott such a question.

Regards,

Crash the system. Everyone should identify themselves as Native American.

I might be one of these people, as I went from white to nothing. I won’t fill in race on any form anymore.

Here in Texas some state forms, when asking for race, lists Anglo but no Caucasian. It possible, even probable, to be Caucasian while not being Anglo.

I did that in 2010 and got a follow-up “visit” from two census takers who probably changed it back.

The government has no right to ask these questions.

Interesting! How many chose to be “White”?

The article obviously avoided giving the results of their “survey”.

Nearly 10 million Americans decided they would be a different race or ethnicity in the early 2000s

How many of them changed it after being "outed", like "Liawatha" Elizabeth Warren did?

That’s so funny, since Anglo is a term for non-Hispanic. You are either Hispanic or non-Hispanic in certain parts of Texas I guess, in addition to the other classifications.

I don’t understand why there are racial or gender categories.

There’s no objective measure that can be applied (at least not anymore), so people can say they are whatever they want to be.

So the logical conclusion, if white males have such a high level of “privilege” as the left insists, is that everyone should self-identify as a white male so they can get some of that privilege.

Yet, they don’t. Wonder why that is?

The only privilege white males have, is having a job and paying into the system to support the takers. I’ve done that for over 45 years and sick and tired of pulling the wagon.

When I was in high school, I saw a number of people who were half or a quarter something list their ethnicity as minority for scholarships and job opportunities - particularly if you had a Spanish last name.
It isn’t unreasonable for a lot of people to claim minority status when it gives you hiring and promotion preferences.
