I’d suspect Sierra Leone is having troubles recording information about deceased patients—either that or they have a different strain.

Nice graph, but unfortunately it’s wildly inaccurate.

The numbers in Liberia and Sierra Leone, in particular, are universally agreed to be massively understated. Even the WHO, the most politicized and least effective group involved in this mess, cautions against using the official numbers.

According to this morning’s news, Sierra Leone has officially given up trying to care for the victims in any kind of medical center and is now attempting to provide materials for people to care for victims at home. In a practical sense, the same situation exists in Liberia although they have not made it official.

Guinea is harder to figure out. It has approximately 10 million people, approximately the same as Liberia and Sierra Leone combined. The news from Guinea has been much more limited.

I do not know what the differences are between Guinea and the other two countries, but based on the limited information I have seen it seems reasonable to assume that the eventual outcome there will be the same as in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone has been written off as hopeless. Its collapse is just a matter of time now.

Yep.

Liberia is just as bad, or worse. They've imposed draconian controls on the press, so we may not hear not much about it though.

So...

The questions of the moment are:

1. Will Guinea go the way of Liberia and Sierra Leone?

2. When will the outsiders who are trying to help pull out?

3. How will the flood of desperate refugees that is surely coming be contained?

It struck me that you clarified the definition of airborne transmission in another thread. I'll reply here, since few will read the other one:
"people can be infected by particles in the air containing the virus."

This is a good definition of true airborne -- aerosolized particles, which Ebola is not. Something like weaponized Anthrax IS.

"a draft or gust of wind could carry droplets a considerable distance."

A good definition of extended droplet dispersion which is not the same as airborne dispersion, according to formal definitions. Still deadly, though.

From BBC

Ebola is ‘entrenched and accelerating’ in West Africa
10 October 2014

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Ebola is now entrenched in the capital cities of all three worst-affected countries and is accelerating in almost all settings.

WHO deputy head Bruce Aylward warned that the world’s response was not keeping up with the disease in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The three countries have appealed for more aid to help fight the disease.

The outbreak has killed more than 3,860 people, mainly in West Africa.

More than 200 health workers are among the victims.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Aylward said the situation was worse than it was 12 days ago.

“The disease is entrenched in the capitals, 70% of the people affected are definitely dying from this disease, and it is accelerating in almost all of the settings,” he said.

The medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) reported a sharp increase of Ebola cases in the Guinean capital, Conakry, dashing hopes that that the disease was being stabilised there.

Speaking to the BBC on Friday, MSF President Joanna Liu called for urgent international action.

“We’re not winning the battle,” she said.

“To get ahead of the game we’re going to need to deploy much more massively than what we have done so far.”

I’ve seen plenty of videos of flies swarming people’s faces to the point the flies walk over their open eyes.

I posted this previously on this thread, however worth reposting. There is a pretty good discussion of it here:

To most folks, if you can breathe it in,it is airborne. Period.

Goofing around with technical and possibly misleading definitions is just one of the variations of the hubris that will get people killed.

If it isn't airborne, it is damned sure airmobile.

( nice one that, Joe ) -----------------------------------------

I've been with you on this for a long time. CDC and Lab rats should take all the studies with a big grain of salt. This ain't the same Ebola of 1976 or whatever. It's a new critter, similar but that 3% genetic difference maybe makes it different.

There are doctors and nurses fighting this on the ground. MSF has been there and done that before, and they're telling us it's different. My money is on them, not the Unka Sugar paper shufflers.

I have high hopes for Zmapp... the sad part is that it has been sitting around for several years not being produced...

I would like to personally thank the three of you for your yeoman’s work in documenting this pandemic-in-the-making.

As has been the case during the last 15 years, Free Republic has been the source of truth, despite the machinations of the Left to the contrary.

Well Done, Freepers.
