After years and years of hosting Thanksgiving for friends and family, I am on my own this year. My friends are either overseas or have moved out of the area, or have moved to live near their children, and my children are scattered. I have no family. So I am on my own.
I am looking for ideas for something to do on Thanksgiving, some place to go. I am considering Montreal, Asheville, etc. I live in the Northeast, and would have about 2K to spend. I am not fond of large cities, would love to do something fun, and something that would not be considered unusual when done alone. I also realize the issue of how difficult Thanksgiving travel is.
I have been wracking my brain for a couple of weeks. Does anyone one have any ideas? I could use some help here.
Thanks.
Your favorite soup.
volunteer.
Sanibel Island on the Gulf Coast (off Ft Meyers). Nice beaches with great “shelling”, quaint shopping areas, a number of first rate restaraunts, lodging averages about $200 a night that time of year. Mrs Afterguard and I have been going for years.
Take a turkey down to the mission. help them cook and have dinner with them.

Me too. Have you ever been to Bermuda?

I did that one year I was stuck with no family or friends on Thanksgiving. I went to a small town in Arizona where the homeless and poor were being served on a decent scale.
Maybe 250 or so. I showed up at 9am and said "what can I do?"
I was put in charge of the drinks and served all day until about 1600.
They gave me a dinner as well.
A very nice memory of Thanksgiving.
You are welcome at our home.
All the tourists are gone in November....locals mostly. At Christmas there are lights at big house, but it is not so much for tourism and cold here in Mountains by November.
______________
I kind of wondered about that. Thank you.
Then file all those hospice, retirement home, hospital ideas away for later. They are fine ideas, but not what you need this Thanksgiving. I love the idea of the Virgins, the Keys, and that Iceland idea sounds outrageous (in a good way) too!
I hear Ferguson, Missouri is a nice place to visit.
Yes. Volunteer at the local homeless shelter or soup kitchen, or get with your church or neighbors and organize some bags of food for those less fortunate than you if you can. Nothing liking giving on Thanksgiving. God will triple your blessings.
I am living proof.
Williamsburg has wonderful Thanksgiving menus in their restaurants. They range widely on foods served and price. Make sure you try the Peanut Soup. :)
If not, order yourself a turkey dinner from Boston Market, get yourself your favorite bottle of wine then join me here on FR where we can chat......
I’ve never been to Sanibel island, but have heard that it is wonderful.
:)
Grove Park Inn in Asheville. It awesome at Thanksgiving.
I have been thinking of Plymouth, wooly and cold!
I'm a single older woman too. My goto place is the West coast of FLORIDA. Naples is wonderful, rather quiet. still safe and demographically OK. Republican, with a Tea Party group too. I've also enjoyed Sarasota. You could do both on one vacation. I like traveling alone. Found it easy to connect with people in both places, especially Naples.
A lot of info available online. Here's some: http://www.southernliving.com/travel/south-east/florida-west-coast-beaches Also, I really like staying in B&B's. Always someone to talk to , plus owners give good advice on appropriate local attractions. I like the safety of being even loosely connected to locals , just in case.
San Juan, PR. The flight time from Boston is about 3.5 hours; depending on your travel days, you may be able to snag a flight for about $220 round trip; the weather is great; the people are great; the beaches are great; the food is great; and you will feel like you are in a foreign country without leaving the Country.
Is it a place that has enough to do? It is a school town so it would be empty for the Thanksgiving season?
No I haven’t, everyone I know loves it.
