A man who admitted killing a knife-wielding robber who took his son's iPhone has been jailed for six years.

Derek Grant, 38, confronted Patrick Bradley after the 29-year-old had held up his son Jordan in Greenock on 30 August last year.

During the confrontation, Bradley stabbed Grant in the eye, after which Grant then fatally stabbed him.

Grant was originally charged with murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

At the High Court in Livingston judge Lord Boyd noted that Bradley "was a man of violence" and had "10 convictions for assault" prior to his death. Criminal record

He told Grant: "But you, of course you did not know that. What you did know was that earlier that night Patrick Bradley had robbed your son of his mobile phone at knifepoint.

"Had he been caught it seems likely given his record that he would have been prosecuted in this court, the High Court, and on conviction would have received a High Court sentence.

"As it happens you had the means to bring him to justice because the phone had been easily located by the Find My iPhone app."

Father confronts thief and gets stabbed in the eye. Father then knifes the thief to death

Dad gets 6 years jail for self defense. With the court saying he should have called the police instead of confronting the thief with a long history of violent crimes

That is pretty much what I read, too. Dad should have been awarded a medal, not sent to prison.

Another fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine example of how the UK is leading the West into the abyss of death and destruction.

What a worthless country. Seriously, who needs them? Breeding terrorists, raping little girls wholesale and toadying up to Obama when it suits them. I say we start flying drones over the UK tommorow.

Of course, this is Formerly Great Britain, where criminals have more rights than upstanding citizens subjects.

BWAAHAHAHAHA. Police don't bother with following up on phone thefts.

I know too many people who've been instructed as such by HPD.

Why wasn’t Grant given a medal instead of being sent to jail?

This happened in England. The father should have yelled “Allahu Akbar!” as he stabbed the thief and he would have walked free.

“Had he been caught it seems likely given his record that he would have been prosecuted in this court, the High Court, and on conviction would have received a High Court sentence.”

What would make the father think that, the punk obviously hadn’t been given any harsh sentences before. Probably got “strongly cautioned” a lot, then probation, time served, etc. Certainly he didn’t learn not to rob people.

Yep the Brits are in the tank and we are headed into it as well. Protecting thugs seems to be a favorite lib theme.

Because he armed himself, got a group together and went looking for a fight?

In any state, even those with Stand Your Ground laws, if you arm yourself and go out looking for a fight, when you find one your ability to plead self-defense is greatly reduced if not eliminated.

Also because UK has “knife control” laws by which his simply carrying the knife is itself a crime. I don’t necessarily agree with those laws, but they ARE the law there.

I live in Florida, the state with the most horrible SYG laws, as we all know. :)

Despite these laws, if I have a beef with my neighbor because I think he stole something, and I get my homies together, arm myself and go confront him, and somebody winds up dead, I’m in serious trouble, even if he is the one that initiates violence.

That’s because I initiated the confrontation. Since my group outnumbers him 4:1 and is armed, HE would have a very good case for self-defense if I or one of my boys winds up dead.

If we are ever asked for the third time to save England from defeat in a war... just say “No thanks.”

Actually........there are so many coppers in the UK with nothing much to do I would not be surprised if they will go after a stolen Apple pruduct with that tracking software

From All I read from the UK is that being a cop there is a super-PC job that is quite feminized. UK economy stinks and everyone wants this kind of job. They are way overstaffed

Stolen Apple iphone is kinda sexy so it gets  a rise out of UKs feminized police force. They will track it (my opinion) and do something

If the perps are going to gouge your eye out upon reclaiming a stolen phone, I don’t think the beat patrol are going to go there.

Too risky.

How is confronting a thief and demanding back what he stole looking for a fight? You  are blaming the victim instead of the thief (who started this all) with  a long rap-sheet and who struck first blinding the father in one eye

The father is damn lucky he brought a knife or he would be dead. You think the now dead thief would have had an ounce of remorse if he killed the unarmed father?
