Anyone ever had dogs & cats in your area acting like they're scared but you can't figure out why?

Several people in my area have noted that their pets are acting weird. The behavior usually amounts to staring out windows and doors whining and shivering and hiding under tables and other furniture etc. .

Or if they are outside they badly want inside even though they never do much any other time.

They also keep tails tucked and sort of slink around like they are in distress.

This is not one or two people but my count has over 20 different households within a ten mile radius that have pets acting in the same way for about 3 days now.

My dog can not seem to settle down and wants to be as close as he can get to me and the Missus. Some thought it is the festival in town but it just set up Yesterday and the behavior has been going on longer than that. And we had no such behavior last year reported.

We are all at a loss and the local vet has no idea but he tells us dogs and cats can sense stuff humans can't.

There have been no reports of anything out of the ordinary, as far as i know.
The Cows are grazing quietly and the Dogs and Cats as chilled as ever.

It could be fracking.... This is a relatively new procedure, and probably needs more studies. Since it can mimic earthquake like activity, and if they did it on a regular basis, that could explain the animal behavior for such a long period of time.

It is in Ohio: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fracking-linked-to-ohio-earthquakes-officials-say/

My brother is a petroleum engineer and began working in Ohio in 1979 with Halliburton, and they were fracking even then. The hullabaloo over fracking is recent, it’s been going on since the 1940s with Standard oil fracking in Oklamahoma.

They might shoot dogs, but they don’t eat them.

I posted and then read the other replies, so I know now that many others had the same thoughts.

Yep. She’s afraid of her own shadow but loves animals.

Our daughter JUST let us know that her tabby (formerly one of ours) has been looking up at her ceilings “spacey” over the last 2 days

That's a good indication of mouse, squirrels or other varmits up in the attic.

The pets sense the fracking and anticipate an earthquake?

a local cable tech said they have had some issues due to solar activity

That's the usual meme to 1) they're too lazy to fix the problem or 2) they have no clue what is causing the problem.

Since there are several pets acting weird around your neighborhood then it might be a new factory that has gone in or an old one got a new machine that is making high pitched sounds. I understand he doesn't travel well but take him just 5 miles away and play at a park or visit a friend so he's no in the car. See if he's more relaxed. If so, then reduce the miles to 3. Then 2 miles. Then you'll know if it's in your neighborhood and can track it down. Has there been an upgrade in electrical wiring or new power poles? Maybe a tower of some sort. Or drive around with the windows open to see if there's a new smell.

If only... no new anything job wise. It would be HUGE news if so. Southern Ohio has a high unemployment rate and there is nothing new in the area. And the one factory in town has added no new machines etc. because it would be big news if so.

I checked Princeton’s Collective Conscious Project site but can’t make heads or tails of it so can’t say if there’s any disaster coming or not.

With the long holiday weekend, perhaps the pets were frightened from fireworks. All the inside and outside four legged wonders are fine here. The neighbor dogs look happy in their yards. The birds have been feeding normally and a squirrel was playing on the porch earlier so I haven’t noticed any behavioral changes.

I live on the edge of the buffer zone for a NASA rocket engine testing site. The house shakes and the windows rattle when they test the big engines, but that never scared off the squirrels before. Also I haven’t felt any engine tests recently.

Now I’m wondering if something got into the food chain or water sources recently. Our neighborhood gets sprayed by aircraft regularly for mosquito control, but it never had an effect on the squirrels in the past. But maybe they switched to a different type or used a higher concentration.

I really do think that squirrels can be like the canary in a mineshaft. Normally I have 15 to 20 nesting squirrels out here in the summer. Haven’t seen any dead ones, so that is good.

Well, now I’ve noticed something.Tonight my horses are all on edge.My Fox Trotter who’s normally a very calm guy is about having an anxiety attack.Staring out into the sky, spooking in the stalls and crying out.Very unusual for this group.

I haven’t noticed my dogs acting strangely but I have noticed that they aren’t eating as much as usual. I have 4 dogs and we free feed, the food bowls are out all the time. I haven’t had to fill the bowls in several days. They are eating a little, very little, compared to the way they usually eat. I can’t blame the hot weather because we have had summer weather for 3 full months, and this just started about a week or so ago..
