A Mason City mother was shocked and furious as her son and his stepbrother faced criminal charges for allegedly stripping the bark from a tree.

The boys, ages 13 and 14, were charged with felony second-degree criminal mischief in connection with removing bark from four to five feet of the trunk of a mature tree, on the grounds of an elementary school, August 5, 2014.

The mother of one of the boys said her son pulled a piece of bark that was falling off the tree, and that other boys did the same thing. A neighbor, who saw what the boys were doing, then reportedly called police according to the Globe Gazette.

Two other kids reportedly carved their initials into the tree. They were not charged.

Felonies go to prison, misdemenors to jail.

Did they kill the tree, or was it just loose bark like on a hickory tree?

I need to see what the tree looked like after the "youts" got done with it before I get too upset about them being charged.

If they killed the tree, the proper punishment would be 3 hours of biology lessons (about trees, of course) and a follow-up test, and then planting and caring for 30 new trees.

If they just pulled a loose bark off, they should be rewarded for keeping the school grounds clean.

So you have a nosy neighbor (probably a lib if i had to bet) who’s first response is to call the law..... then two other kids not charged at alll....

We no longer live in america...

If “Any Taylor” was called he would have punished the children by making all 4 of them them care for the tree and nmade their parents pay for the materials needed to fix the tree or plant replacements....

We no longer live in america...

Speaking of which, I wonder how the mother voted. If she voted for the big government she’s got, I don’t care what happens to her and her spawn. Otherwise, maybe...

Today, cops overcharge, that is one reason that people are terrified of them, they don’t know how serious minor contact might become, they know that even talking to a cop can result in felony charges of some vague nature.

There used to be discretion used, people, and especially kids were scared straight for minor crimes and then driven home, warning tickets were used and lectures about returning something to the victim, or making good on some damage was often the end.

Today, a five year old can be charged with felonies.

“Iowa teens face felony charges for peeling bark from a tree”

Capitol punishment was invented for crimes like this.

If they had been seen hugging the tree on school grounds, a commendation from the principal would be forthcoming..

"If they killed the tree, the proper punishment would be 3 hours of biology lessons (about trees, of course) and a follow-up test, and then planting and caring for 30 new trees."

That depends on if they killed it by just being stupid, or if they killed it by malicious vandalism. If that's the case, then screw'em - we have too many vandals.

But we don't know if someone over-reacted, or if they actually did bark it all the way around. I can't see barking it all the way around as being anything but vandalism.
