Sounds almost like a good fit for my apocalypse, which I called, “the metal death”, in which people came to fear the rise of robots so much, they destroyed anything made of metal.

They tore down buildings, dragged the steel skeletons and the iron bridges and all the car carcasses into the nearest ocean to be safely dropped into a bottomless sea.

No radio broadcasts, no television, no communication, and no word going out to the various human settlements around the solar system. Anyone who had escaped Earth was now on his own.

It was quiet and lonely; and peaceful.

But it didn’t feel safe. Those who had survived would need to know what became of mankind. Was the human race salvageable?

Someone would have to find out.

Someone would have to go down there, and hopefully come back, somehow.

.

Someone.

.

“Kerwa’s Quest”.

Mine would take place several thousand years after yours.

That makes sense. If I rewrite this I will have the main character spend more time watching the cities burn and then pretty much vanish under growing vegetation. He would look for signs of civilization in the darkness below while over the dark side of the planet.

You’ll have to make him more of an engineer. Not just a broadcast engineer, but a jack of all trades.

He’ll need to jury-rig some mechanisms on his orbital platform, just to survive long enough to be a witness the way you’re describing.

I’d also suggest making the call to his destination more promising, even if it turns out not to be quite accurate.

System scavenging.
Pull from unused monitors and computers to keep life support functioning.
MIR is a good example of what and how they did that.

My idea was that water was leaking from the center (a lot of the water from condensation as life support systems ) outward due to the centrifugal gravity and had created a deep pool in the last habitat with the escape capsule docked at the bottom of that.

You are right though. I was just going through it too fast. I’ll make it longer.

That will still work, a “Uh oh, time to die” time constraint element would work.

Can you eat that egg?
By Scott Matthews

If not sure you ought-ter,
then place it in water.
If it lies on its side,
then it’s fresh; eat with pride.

After three or four days,
at an angle it lays.
But, it still is a treat,
so go on and eat.

Ten days, stands on end,
in your baking ’twill blend.
‘Cause it’s definitely edible,
in your baking, incredible.

But, if it floats on the surface,
that egg serves no purpose.
‘Cause a floater’s a stinker!
Out the back door best fling ‘er!

I think I got some ideas from the feedback on this thread to improve this first part too.
