Rest in Peace Lee....
Always been a fan of Osprey Aircraft's/George Pereira's GP-4 and I hope that all that went into the GP-5 isn't abandoned and they can keep racing with the Glasairs and Lancairs, just like in the beginning with their GP-4.
Wow. Missed this ... just too sad. The Sports Class is a lot of fun to watch. Then again, all of the races are fun to watch. RIP Mr. Behel ... God keep you.
;)
Amen, in triplicate.
I totally understand and even sympathize (when the planes are WWII era, which as you know by now, the Sports class does not include those planes). On the other hand ... even with the super-modified vintage planes that fly ... the planes deserve to fly. Better that they go out flying than to sit and turn to dust. God bless everyone at the Reno Air Races this week and keep all safe.
Owch!! {^) As a female ... I agree!! {^) I am getting tired of feminized men!
If you've ever gone to the wonderful Planes of Fame museum in Chino, CA, you see that ALL the planes there are either in flying condition or being restored to flying condition. At the Reno air races, the vintage WWII planes that have been super-duper-modified to race in the piston-driven "Unlimited Class" have reached speeds exceeding 500 mph!!!
Speaker, I understand your desire to preserve the unpreservable. Do please respect the rights of others to risk their lives and machines they OWN, and keep your "priceless aircraft" to collect dust in museums. The planes at Reno, whether sports class or Unlimited or jets, were built to fly and that's what they should do.
I respect private property. I never mentioned banning air racing. I made a comment that I think these planes should be used, not abused. That is all. Others put words in my mouth.
As far as I know, he was flying around an oval course marked by pylons. He wasn't trying to avoid obstacles.
I hate "journalists"
