Parents' House Seized Over Son's $40 In Drugs
The rare moments Christos Sourovelis can take a break from running his own painting business, he can be found toiling away on his family's dream house in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
"I'm a working guy. I work every day, six days a week, even seven if I have to," Sourovelis says. One day this past March, without warning, the government took his house away, even though he and his wife, Markella, have never been charged with a crime or accused of any wrongdoing...

Statists hate private property, like all good communists. They know they can’t just seize it outright, so they do it sneakily. “Asset forfeiture” is one way. The property tax is another way.
No.
You can if you want to.
Quite frankly I’ve given up on the human species, not just this society, but every society.
Mankind is a failure.
Works now, but is very slow to load.
To be fair, Philly didn’t invent forfeiture laws. Gerage H. W. Bush started us down that road.
When I got to the Philly part it all fell in place.
Most crack houses have negative value, since demo and disposal costs are higher than the house is worth. Can’t buy shiny toys that way.
At the very, very least, I’d like to see all those older motels and apartment complexes that deliberately cater to swaths of illegals be seized and forfeited.
Yes!
I generally look at my side of the street first and where I am wrong I admit it. We take responsibility in our family.
The kid was wrong - PERIOD!
Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time — Words to live by.
Or, if you get in trouble and all your stuff gets taken away because that is what the law says, blame someone else because your kid was idiot enough to bring drugs into your home — Be a victim.
Again, in our family, we chose to take responsibility for our actions.
“Or, if you get in trouble and all your stuff gets taken away because that is what the law says, blame someone else because your kid was idiot enough to bring drugs into your home Be a victim.”
Wow, so confiscating property from private citizens who haven’t committed a crime, with no due process, is okay in your book, as long as “that is what the law says”. Well, at least you are willing to go on record with that sentiment.
Maybe if she didn’t have the Russian dating services ad, her website might work.
When did this happen, this is major news and the first I’ve heard of it, it definitely is off line, how long has it been down?, are you sure it is down for being critical of islam, there are many reasons for a site to go down, do you have a link that identifies it was taken down for criticizing a parade?
I mean Pamela Geller always has been about exposing islam, why now, criticizing a parade is an almost a non-issue compared to most of her reporting.
If true this is a very big deal, we need more info soon.
Yes, her site came up for me just now.
And I am also on record with the statement; “Again, in our family, we chose to take responsibility for our actions.”
We don’t blame others for our failures or shortcomings — It’s a Christian thing.
What actions of the home-owners justify their losing their home? And why should this take place with no trial much less any finding of guilt beyond reasonable doubt?
I’m surprised that inventive civil libertarians haven’t strategically placed controlled substances on the properties of anyone who advocates asset forfeiture and SWATted them.
Ever look up "petty" in the dictionary? How very appropos...
So the kid bought heroin, so what? How does that justify any rational demand of forfeiture by the parents under U.S. Code? I want to see the wording of the law which makes that legal.
Inquiring minds want to know.
Yeah me too although it’s very slow. That is about the 4th site this week I saw shut down after they posted stories bashing Muslims.
Her site takes a while to load but it does come up.
“How the police can take property without a conviction is beyond me.”
You have no Constitution—thus no Bill of Rights.
Enjoy your police state! It will make you safe.
How on earth could the parents not see that their spud was dealing drugs in the house? Or bringing drugs into the house?
