Panel Urges Overhauling Health Care at End of Life
NY Times ^ | Sept 17, 2014 | PAM BELLUCK

The country’s system for handling end-of-life care is largely broken and should be overhauled at almost every level, a national panel concluded in a report released on Wednesday...

The 507-page report, “Dying in America,” said its recommendations...would produce significant savings that would help make health care more affordable.

It seems to recommend a big push on sending folks home to die - pushing advanced directives and a "Revolution in health care education" pushing palliative care, and "dramatic change in all the certifying boards, accrediting boards and regulatory entities". Change the law as needed and establish reimbursement for browbeating the sick and depressed into signing advanced directives.

Send old people home with enough opiates to overdose seems to be the proposed standard of care.

As in all things, whatever the left doesn't seek to ban, they will probably seek to make mandatory.

A national panel on death and dying....

...a National Death Panel, for lack of a better name...

But we don’t have one of those...

...Obama told us so...

Doing such diagnostic tests are likely to only uncover more conditions that are expensive to treat.

That just does not make sense to a bureaucrat who is rewarded for reducing costs.

“The country’s system”

The country should not have any such system. That is the problem. The very premise is collectivist and/or statist.

Note how the NY Times journalist has to add this sentence: “The bottom line is the health care system is poorly designed to meet the needs of patients near the end of life,” said David M. Walker, a Republican and a former United States comptroller general, who was a chairman of the panel.”

This underpins their tired argument that “even Republicans support these types of initiatives.”

If I ever reach my 80's it sure looks like I'm gonna be fresh out of luck if I get sick.My Dad lived to 89 and he had many health issues for the last 10 years or so of his life. But we'd take him to the hospital or doctor each time something was wrong and he got the care he so badly needed and clearly deserved.

I thank God that when Obama's in his 80's he'll get everything he needs *immediately* and *free* (courtesy of working stiffs like us).

After realizing I couldn’t remember when I last had a PSA done I called my urologist. I know it was at least 2 yrs. They told me that after you are 80 yrs old they no longer do them. Classic example of what Sarah Palin called death panel.
Fortunately a local health store has an arrangement with LabCorp. For $25 they will give you an order for a PSA. Pretty reasonable compared what the hospital would cost. There are many reasonably priced lab work fees available.

They laughed when normal people said “death panels.”

I think a person should have all of the end of life care they and their family can afford.
