Sunshine tied to suicide risk: study

Fri, Sep 12 2014

By Andrew M. Seaman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Exposure to sunshine over a short period of time may increase the risk of suicide but may also lower the risk over several months, suggests a new study from Austria.

People shouldn’t avoid the sun based on the study’s findings, says its senior author. Instead, they may consider adding sunshine to the list of factors that may influence the risk of suicide.

“Suicide is complicated and has many risk factors,” said Dr. Matthaeus Willeit from the University of Vienna.

“People always tend to think of it in either biological or social terms, but there is no single cause,” he said. “It’s a bunch of risk factors that you have. That is just one of many risk factors.”

This sounds so ridiculous, I have no idea how to even interpret it. Most people are exposed to sunshine on a daily basis...

I am throwing the bull $hit flag on this stupidity. Next they’ll say too much green grass causes suicides.

I can distantly hear my Psych 101 so-highly-thought of professor: “I know this doesn’t make any sense now, but it’ll all tie together in the end.”

He lied. Somewhat of an education in itself.

Goofy article; you'd get depressed just trying to figure out what the heck they are saying. I take vitamin d supplements as I tested low, and my other doctor said to get 20 minutes of sunshine a day (whenever possible) to provide more vitamin d.

It is known that vitamin d is helpful against depression.

Makes sense to me, I guess.

If you’re 19 and you stay up all night, it’s like a victory, like you’ve beat the night, but, if you’re over 30, then that sun is like God’s flashlight.- G. Carlin, RIP.

Sounds like the sample was all city people who only got outside rarely or the study was conducted in a gray, depressing climate, to me. It’d have to be, in order to avoid sufficient sunlight to get to the beneficial level of it as far as depression.

Maybe a brief dose of sunshine only served to highlight how very gray and depressing their everyday reality is?

I bet listening to this song would do the same thing!

Electric Light Orchestra - Mr Blue Sky
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjPqsDU0j2I

“Mr. Blue Sky”

Sun is shinin’ in the sky,
There ain’t a cloud in sight
It’s stopped rainin’
Everybody’s in a play
And don’t you know
It’s a beautiful new day.

Runnin’ down the avenue,(Pant, Pant, Pant)
See how the sun shines brightly
In the city on the streets
Where once was pity,
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today.

[Chorus:]
Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why,
You had to hide away
For so long where did we go wrong.

Hey there Mr. Blue
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do,
Everybody smiles at you.

Hey you with the pretty face,
Welcome to the human race
A celebration Mr. Blue Sky’s
Up there waitin’ and today
Is the day we’ve waited for

[Chorus]

Mr. Blue you did it right,
But soon comes Mr. Night,
Creepin’ over, now his
Hand is on your shoulder,
Never mind I’ll remember you this way.

[Chorus]

Pure nonsense. “Babies breast fed risk suicide.” We are in an age of fathomless stupidity.
