I never said I agreed with this idiot... I am pointing out that many people are ignorant of facts and tend to gut react on what they think to be fact.
I agree if you are going to do it do it right, but honestly I find no problem with the CIC not saluting the military back, it is a very important distinction that our President is not military, and is a civilian.
There are so many things to get truly upset about, this one is just fodder nothing more. This is just hey, here something to stir up the converted... its bread and circuses.

My service was under a saluting President Reagan.....all others seem disrespectful after those years.
Actually President Obama does not have to salute, and I wish he wouldn’t.... if he isn’t going to do it right.

If clumsy me was walking down irregular stairs, trying to maintain balance, and I had objects in arm and hand like Obama does, the cup possibly containing liquid, the marines would get a similar salute from me, hopefully with an apology if I had the presence of mind at the moment.
You’re only partly correct. The CinC is the only civilian that ranks a salute from members of the military. And while no law or rule, as you call it, requires him to return the salute, custom certainly does. And custom requires that it not be half-hearted or half-assed. Hell, even Boner Bill, with his admitted loathing of the military, never did anything as lame as return a salute with a cup of coffee in his hand....
Would it be within military protocol for those two Marines to ask or challenge his ‘’salute’’ by refusing to drop theirs and remind or indicate to the C-in-C “Sir that is not the proper salute?
It would be brave and then they’d be guarding glacier melt in Alaska.

I agree if you are going to do it, do it right, but hardly is this some insane breach or protocol or responsibility.
The guys an idiot, everyone knows he’s an idiot, and of all the dumb things he’s done this is beyond trivial.. but its nice red meat for people who are going to get upset about anything he does instead of the real stupid stuff he is doing in the world that is likely to cost their kids and grandkids.

I am somewhat in agreement. Coming down a rolling stair from an aircraft with your hands full and then realizing you have a coffee cup what is he going to do. Stop on the stair blocking others, set everything down on a small tread, change the coffee cup to the other hand and then return the salute with his right hand? Either he does what he did, an inelegant perfunctory gesture of returning the salute, or he ends up a bigger dofuss dropping his briefcase etcetera.
This guy has bigger items beyond his awkwardness and throwing like a girl in mom jeans. He is a walking chain of destruction and focus on this makes real and valid criticism have less impact.
Actually, President Ford tried to juggle his actions on a stairway ramp just like this and ended up falling most of the way down the stair.
I think I will paraphrase your great comment and say that he is fighting on both sides of the War with ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
