Last night on Monday Night Football, the ESPN crew couldnt stop praising the loud, engaged home crowd at the Kansas City Chiefs Arrowhead Stadium. They opened the game with a ceremony where running back Christian Okoye, The Nigerian Nightmare, pounded on a giant drum as tens of thousands of Chiefs fans cheered on. The crowd, many of whom wore feathers and American Indian-themed garb, chanted and did the Tomahawk Chop. They were so loud that, if you believe these measures, they set the new Guinness World record for loudest crowd roar, surpassing the Seahawks. It was a pretty awesome (in the traditional meaning) scene, unless you were a New England Patriot or a Patriots fan.
But I gotta ask, wheres the outrage from the politically correct?
Bob Costas? Phil Simms? Keith Olbermann? Dont you have anything to say about this?
Theres plenty of controversy about the Washington Redskins name. Rob Tracinski and Bill Voegeli have both written about the history of that controversy for us. My own view is that its lack of unpopularity or prioritization among Native Americans is a reason not to change the name. Sally Jewell, the U.S. Interior Secretary, recently noted this:
That was the estimation of Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, whose department oversees the Indian Affairs federal agency, when she was asked about the controversial brand in an interview with ABC News.
Personally, I think we would never consider naming a team the Blackskins or the Brownskins or the Whiteskins. So, personally, I find it surprising that in this day and age, the name is not different, Jewell told ABC News David Kerley.

>>No, thats not okay,<<
And here I thought FR had evolved beyond the need for /sarc tags :)
Oblivion would only cause shootings because it sucked.
“When I was in College all I ever heard was how offensive the Kansas City Chiefs were, Along with the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians and the Atlanta Braves!
It was in my Textbook for Pete’s Sake!

You must be young.
When I was in school ethnic slurs were de riguer. No one cared and we were all targets.
.
No tag needed. I could tell you were being sarcastic. :-)
Crazies run the schools and colleges these days
Why would they? The homosexuals already conquered the Scouts.
I’ve been suggesting Landover Redskins, since they play in Landover, MD.
But they also have that threatening logo. You know, the...da da da da da.......arrowhead. Looks like a threat of violence. Now back to the UFC and MMA finals.
>>No tag needed. I could tell you were being sarcastic. :-)<<
And I 100% agree with the irritants you listed. And add commercials that rhyme “best” with “all the rest.”
It’s purely about strategy. Defeat one & you defeat them all. Don’t try to take them all on at one time.
If the Redskins become the Kowtows, then the Chiefs, the Seminoles, the Fighting Irish & all the rest will be no more.
After that, other team names will be politically corrected. Can’t have team names that imply violence or religion. The Saints will HAVE to go, as will lions, tigers, & bears. Cubs might get by as they are so cute. Yankees is just plain RACIST. And what is it they are PACKING in Green Bay?
I grew up in KC, and I always thought “Chiefs” was a reference to the leaders of the Scottish clans.
Well, you certainly have a point there.
Brings back memories of “Sticks and stones may hurt by bones but words will never hurt me.” Now I guess it’s “words will EVER hurt me.” Good thing I’m old enough to have an alligator hide. No offense to gators intended.
The only thing truly insulting to Native Americans IMO is that Chief Wahoo logo of the Cleveland Indians.
The Washington Redskin is, by comparison, a very respectful portrait.
The Florida State Seminoles originated the chop. They should be collecting royalties.
How about Saints? Isn't that denigrating Christians?
That's the fans and not the Chiefs. A number of years ago the team tried to squelch that but the fans did it anyway.
The Chiefs were assessed a 15 yard penalty on the kickoff for this.
“I say get rid of the word Washington in their name. Thats the embarrassment. Leave it at Redskins”
Best “name change” idea yet!
