Do you pack weeks ahead for a long trip.. Or wait until the last minute?

In less than three weeks, we hit the airways and cruise the Asia waters and gateways not Asia, Singapore and Beijing... I haven't started packing.

I am notorious for over-packing.. I may use foam inserts next time to fill the suitcase out and leave some of the stuff home.

Anyone have any packing tips?

My wife hates it when I use a double plastic bag for a carry on. She has her stylish leather etc.

We carry meds on also. In case the check in gets delayed.

I start a list on my phone of what to pack and then I pack using that list the day before. And no matter where I’m going and no matter for how long, I do my best to only take a carry-on sized suitcase. If there’s any way to do laundry where I’m going, I only bring three days’ worth of clothes. And I am a female, lol.

I do what Slyfox does, but I make a pretty thorough written list, and check it off before I head out. I also keep it with me for the return trip so I don’t leave items behind.

However, my husband always reminds me that most forgotten things can be purchased. I think that depends on the destination. In the USA, that’s pretty much true. Outside of the US, it takes a little more work.

I’m on business in Mexico now. I pack exactly one carry on regardless of how long I am away. That’s it. My computer bag and one carry on. If it is more than a week, I will be wearing some cloths more than once.

What advice was he looking for again. Oh yea! For a week of travel, I pack the night before. I load the right currency into my wallet, make sure I have the right equipment for my computer, and my travel kit is always ready to go with soap, razor, deoderant, cologne, band aids, thread and needle (black and white), Ibuprofen, nail clippers, chapstick and fresh superglue. I pick out a book and throw in my bag. I pack6 pair of underwear, T-shirts and socks. I usually take 3 pairs of dress pants, 5 or 6 dress shirts, jeans, a pair of shorts, work out pants, sleep shorts, and two casual T-shirts. I pack tennis shoes and wear my dress shoes.

Is that what he is looking for?

Not a bad rule of thumb! I always overpack. I have heard of packing, then take out half. I’m not gutsy enough for that. But the pack 2 sounds like perhaps something I could do. How about a suitcoat?

One thing that might be good is lightweight nylon/polyester stuff. Can wash out in the sink and dry by morning. (I’m looking to buy a set of nylon sports underwear and give those a try for that reason.)

I’m compulsive, so I pack the day before a trip. My wife packs about an hour before departure.

I have a pair of travel pants from TravelSmith. Drys in about 3 hours. On one 19 day trip I pulled out the dress slacks once.

You’re saying people pack “ahead of time?” Why on earth would anyone do that?

How does one get "ahead" of time"? I want to go to tomorrow and find out the lotto numbers.

Wife drags crap out months in advance, I wait until the night before.

Then again, I have not left the islands in over eight years, so no recent habit to relate to.

Strictly business.

Sometimes the folks overseas need some guidance and/or a pep talk.

Mr. RR and I used to travel alot overseas. I learned how to pack.

Try to put everything in a carry-on or gate-checked bag. (Really no need to pay extra for checked luggage.)

Underpack!

Pick one color scheme.

Pack only non-iron clothing.

Instead of folding your shirts and slacks, lay them flat, roll the slacks, fold the arms in on the shirts and roll them. Fewer wrinkles that way. Take a small steamer with you.

Make a copy of your passport and put it in your carry-on. Keep the original passport with you.

Enjoy your trip.

“Is that what he is looking for?”

Ummmm....

You may want to ask “him”.

I try to leave room in my carry on for new things I buy. It’s ok if your forget something, you can buy a new one where you are going. Make sure you have walking shoes and undies, the rest can be improvised.

Last minute. And I kick myself for that all the time.

Roll, roll those clothes. I didn’t believe it but my college daughter who has gone on many band trips made a believer out of me. You can fit so much more and less wrinkles.

Just went to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam for two months. My flight out of Reno was at noon o’clock. i woke up at 7, went to breakfast, then went to Wal Mart. I then hung out on the interwebs for a while. At 9:30 I pulled out my bag, walked downstairs and threw everything in the dryer in it, and that was that. I travel for a living, so my usual packing time for a 2 or 3 week trip is about 15 minutes.

I over-pack when driving, and I try to avoid flying at all costs.

The best advice I can give is to make a list of things you're going to pack, and list them all according to which bag they'll be packed in. Then go through the list and make sure you really need each item. The first things to ditch are the disposable/reusable things that you can buy wherever you are traveling.
