Work Begins on Wrigley Field Renovation Project
NBC Chicago ^ | September 30, 2014 | Anthony Ponce

Construction on the $575 million Wrigley Field renovation project officially went into high gear Monday.

The Chicago Cubs wasted zero time between the end of the baseball season last week and the start of construction.

Over the next six months, workers will expand the bleachers in both outfields, push the stadium's footprint further onto both Waveland Avenue and Sheffield, and lay the foundation for seven new outfield signs along with a 2,400 square foot video scoreboard in right field. The Red and Purple parking lots will also be excavated to make room for underground players' locker rooms and lounges.

Some fans are excited about the changes but others are worried about losing the historic venue's character.

I presume they found some way to make these renovations without shutting down the park for two seasons.

“A pending lawsuit looms over the project. Eight nearby rooftop owners are suing the city claiming the project violates their profit-sharing agreement with the team”

I would think this expansion would block the view of the roof top buildings across the street.

A cute ballpark. But if they are serious about a pennant, a dozen D-12 Cats are the solution.

Last week was the end of the official MLB season. They could have started at the end of the Cubs' season, which is typically mid-May.

Amazing how this can be done when private and not public money is used. The public money involved is a minor part of the upgrade.

Yes, that seems to have been one of the intentions when they designed the renovations.

My beloved, ALDS-bound Kansas City Royals did a two year rebuild of Kauffman Stadium between 2007 and 2009 and still played there during the year. Most of the work was done off season.

Poor Cubs, the Cardinals have won more World Series (2) in their new stadium (erected in 1996) than the Cubs have won in Wrigley (erected in 1914).

Being a Cardinals fan that is hilarious.

That's the kind of thinking that will have the Cubs playing in Schaumburg.

The other day a guy was walking his dog in front of my house. He caught me staring at him. He gave me a dirty look.

I’m sure he thought I was staring at him because he was black.

I was staring at him because he was wearing a KC Royals cap.
Had not seen anybody actually wearing once since the 80’s.

As a lifelong Cardinal’s fan, that’s a very fun fact.

That said, this year the Cards were average at best and have no idea how they won the Central. Friday’s matchup with Dodgers will decide if they can advance to NLCS.

As an aside, I’m right-handed but learned to bat left-handed because the great Stan Musial was my baseball idol. And as a left-handed golfer, Stan still effects me to this day.

My boyfriend and I used to take in 10 or 12 games a year because you could go to Tickets For Less and pay about 60% of face value for really great seats. This year the selection has been down and the prices are up quite a bit. Price of success I guess.

You are correct.

I do envy Cub fans. I have ruined many a beautiful fall day worrying about the Cards chances in the postseason, something Cub fans never have to worry about.

One hopes the ballpark’s renovation proceeds more rapidly than the ballclub’s rebuilding, which is now at 106 years and counting.
