This is the moment a man saw the elderly homeless woman he gives money to every day - driving a new car.

Daniel Ayala walked past the Shell garage on his way to work for weeks to hand a few notes to the panhandler sat on the corner.

One day, he missed lunch to give her $4. But he was sent in to a foul-mouthed rage on Wednesday when he passed by to see her in a 2013 red Fiat.

That was one foul-mouthed elderly cyclist. No wonder she was run over. She should be more grateful to the people trying to help free her.

I sat eating my lunch in my car watching a “homeless” person with his sign reading: “Will work for food. Please give, God Bless.” A nicely dressed woman brought him a bag and a drink from the nearby McDonalds and stood praying with him. He looked contrite and grateful. When she left he threw the bag and drink behind some bushes and continued to beg. As I got ready to leave the weather was getting bad and he walked through the lot to the edge, got into a moderately nice car (newer than mine) and drove away.

The “God Bless” tag on the “homeless” cardboard sympathy sign is dishonest and disingenuous.

I once knew a guy who lived in a loft in downtown Los Angeles. He warned us not to give to any panhandler because they are all professional beggars. One of them, he said, bragged to him about having taken a break from panhandling to vacation in Tahiti.

I volunteer once a month at a homeless facility in Long Beach and on the bulletin board they have a cartoon of the typical guy with the cardboard sign with a caption “if you want to help me call 1-800-Sucker”. The homeless know the scam well.

The scammers I pass in Boston have the nerve to chat on their cellphones while holding out their cups. They have new sneakers and haircuts.

OTOH, there are a handful of schizos who are easy to spot. They should be institutionalized.

But the scammers seem to outnumber the schizos 4:1.

Yeah, there's 2 guys on Main Street in my neighborhood who are regular fixtures as panhandlers. One of them talks to himself, argues with himself, and carries on weird conversations with anyone who actually speaks to him. The other one has set up permanent shop in front of a kosher grocery and the adjoining movie theater. When I give charity, I send it to my chosen organizations via electronic banking. I don't want to open my purse on the street. I also seriously doubt that the permanent guy is unable to work. Why should he? He rakes it in, and all tax-free!

When I lived in Brooklyn, there were several regular panhandlers who stalked kosher restaurants, even coming up to your table begging or trying to sell some ratty ties or pirated videos. The management usually tossed them out. There were also panhandlers stationed regularly in front of kosher groceries. When I refused to give to one filthy woman, she screamed, "I hope you get cancer!" at me. Unfortunately, she was standing between the glass window of the establishment I wished to enter and its door. When I opened the door, and she got her filthy cursing mouth (and other parts) smushed, I guess that shut up her diseased ranting for a while, and saved other patrons from her predations.

“should have taken video of that”

You never know you’re going to see something amazing until it’s too late to video. (Also, my cell phone is one step above a rotary dial. A checkout girl saw it and said, “eew! Who still has one of those?” “Uhm, your customer?”

Well consider ... if you panhandle on a relatively busy street 8 hours a day.. how hard would it be to pull down $20 to $30 an hour.. and that's tax free cash.

Then if you took advantage on all the other programs.. ebt, housing, medical. . That $20 to $30 become pocket money..

On my travels I see panhandlers on highway medians. They are always stationed at intersections and always have a sign. I drive by these same spots a couple of times a week and there are different people there nearly every time. But never two people. An amazing coincidence that two people never show up at these prime spots.

And then I begin to wonder about the clothing and other accoutrements. They look rough...almost too rough.

But perhaps I am overly mean and suspicious, ever since I saw one of them talking on a cell phone.

I was in Bozeman MT. when younger two guys,a gal and a dog asked me for money.

Said they were hungry traveling around looking for work.

I told them they couldn’t be to hungry otherwise they would have eaten the dog.
