What is the best brand of Washer and Dryer?
N/A | 10/21/14 | yt

5 years ago, I purchased an LG front load washer and dryer set. My expectations were as high as the price. About 2 years into it, the first washing machine failed and after many life intruding service calls, I got a new machine under the "lemon" provision of the warranty. This past Sunday, my "new" washer took a dump. Tub won't move. It will run an entire washing cycle and the tub never moves an inch. I have no warranty left and am not inclined to throw any more good money after bad.

We're gong back to a top loader and steering clear of LG and Samsung.

What say ye on the best top loader washer dryer combo today?

Aside from the inconvenience and expense, this experience has solved one problem for me. I now have a target for the family Thanksgiving Day shoot!

I have whirlpools for 17 years now. Easy to fix.

That’s services, not products. And seems completely unrelated to Whirlpool/Maytag, although Maytag Aircraft seems like a good company.

I think av fueling hardware comes from Gilbarco-Veeder-Root, Wayne, OPW and some others.

Afraid, since you have been through this recently, and know enough to write a treatise on it, maybe you can share your knowledge here ; )

I have a 2-year old Maytag dryer. Last week the bulb burned out (came on when you opened the door). Haven’t had the time to check bulb size to replace it but now when I open the door, the dryer does not stop running. Hope this is an easy fix with bulb replacement.

I was a supplier to the Maytag plant in Newton, Iowa for many years. The “Neptune” was one symptom of how nutty Maytag had become over the years.

They hired a new president who couldn't stand to live in a small town. He commuted everyday from Des Moines.

The UAW ran the plant and had actually a dozen union stewards (three or four on every shift.) They were highly paid but did nothing but bitch. This lead to an awful labor-management condition. Even when the guys on the line saw a mistake, they wouldn't say anything.

For a time, Maytag owned the Hoover vacuum line sold in Europe. A poorly written ad for the UK offered a grand prize two week vacation to Paris in a drawing. A judge ruled that EVERYONE who bought a Hoover was to be given the two weeks in Paris...

First whirlpool lasted 20 years. Second one is going on eight years.

1 repair call in 28 years. I guess 2 if you count the one that took out the first washer. Not a bad track record.

The only drawback is in the winter when it gets a bit icy down on the banks of the creek.

Even then its not a problem, because its your wife doing the work.

(Really...I am kidding.)

I’ve been very happy with Kenmore appliances, washers and dryers included. They seem to last almost forever. The only time I’ve had to replace one was a Kenmore dryer I bought while living in Canada (because Kenmore was one of the few brands sold in Canada with warranties valid in the U.S.), which had teflon pads as the bearings on its drum. They eventually wore through and we deemed the labor and parts cost to replace them wasn’t worth it given the age of the machine, so we got a new one which came with a deal that made upgrading our washer at the same time worthwhile, and that pair we still have now 15 years or so on with no sign of giving out any time soon.

My daughter in law has had the same experience & enormous wait time on parts needed to be ordered.

I’m sticking with the top loader.

17 years and counting on our Kenmore Washer / Dryer. Made by Whirlpool / Maytag?

Interesting insider info. Union worker discontent resulted in my unpleasant and costly experience.

I’m not really sure that all the different “brands” are actually different products anymore. Many of the “brands” use the same parts and come from the same factories.

I believe in 2005 the EPA regs changed the consumer washing machine industry for the worse. I would ask about those models with no central agitator, as that is truly newer technology.

For the BEST, I would look into buying (new or used) a COMMERCIAL washing machine, which would not be subject to the new regs, just as full phosphate Calgon can be bought in restaurant supply shops.

Maytag is foreign owned now and has become junk. I had a Whirlpool Duet front loader and dryer for 8.5 years and never had a lick of trouble with either. I plan on getting another set for our new house.

“Just get a basic no bells and whistles machine, I’ve found they last a very long time.”

That’s how I went. Basic whirlpool washer and dryer. Had mine almost 15 years and the only problem I ad was I had to replace a hose. Same with dish washer..

We love our LG front loader as well as our LG tv.

You should have gotten the top loader TV. You stand over it, drop a DVD in, and watch from the top. Reliable as heck.

Based on personal experience, I would normally recommend Maytag. However, Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool in 2006, so all bets are off.
Even though your LG experience was negative, we bought an LG washer/dryer six months ago and have no complaints. You just never know.

As for the Maytag--and a lesson about class action lawsuits--within two weeks of cashing Maytag's $550 check, I was notified of a class action suit against Maytag due to the widespread mildew issue. The most any Maytag washer owner would get from the class action was $500 (for <1 year old machine), and I would have only received about $150.

But the lawyers would have gotten $1000 so Maytag saved $600.
