Bellevue staffers call-in ‘sick’ after Ebola patient arrives

By Jamie Schram and Larry Celona

An extraordinary number of Bellevue Hospital staffers called in sick on Friday rather than treat the city’s first Ebola patient — and those who showed up were terrified to enter his isolation chamber, sources told The Post. “The nurses on the floor are miserable with a ‘why me?’ attitude, scared to death and overworked because all their co-workers called out sick,” one source said. “One nurse even went as far as to pretend she was having a stroke to get out of working there, but once they cleared her in the ER they sent her back up,” the source added.

She shouldn’t have been hugging on him and allowed herself to be used for photo op propaganda. Maybe she’s just ignorant about how evil he is. Still no one would have thought anything about it if she had said I’m not up to par.

My mother, who is an RN in a hospital, says the day they bring in an ebola patient into her hospital is the day she quits. She says there is no way they are prepared to treat one and she will NOT expose herself and her family.

Are you still going to go?

Yup.And I've decided to "quarantine" myself from contact with friends and relatives for 21 days after I leave...even assuming I feel fine during that time. The people with whom I ride on planes, buses and trains,as well as those who live in my condo building...and other strangers...had just better stay away from me when I sneeze! ;-)

I wonder if these (and future) nurses who probably voted for Obama will finally see him for the evil he is.......or just stay clueless and agenda driven and blame Republicans?

Friend’s wife is in Nursing Management. She has said many times that hospitals aren’t ready for this, and that it is a JOB, not a crusade for most of the nurses.

They aren’t going to risk killing their own families over this.

Her Daily Show-watching husband changed his tune on this when she piped up.

Not fair, really. What she said was:

“I feel fortunate and blessed to be standing here today,” Pham said in a press conference Oct. 24. “I would first and foremost like to thank God, my family and friends. Throughout this ordeal, I have put my trust in God and my medical team.”

She gave credit first to God. (Ooops, no mention of 'dear leader'.)

Maybe she was just happy to be alive, and not every (perhaps impressionable) 26 year old gets to meet the president in the Oval Office.

Wait until she figures out he could have prevented her little ordeal by imposing some travel restrictions with his little ol' pen and phone...

“When leaving he said to me,in all seriousness,”if you get sick don’t come here”.

Excellent medical advice from a good doctor.

Reminds me of the only complaints I ever heard about my FP for over 35 years.

As some people/some of his patients aged, their jock injuries started to really impact their life styles. Yet they continued to do the same Jock things that hurt them when they did the Jock things.

So they would come to him with severe pain with complaints like, “I can’t run 5 miles anymore without my knees or hips or both hurting me!”

“I can’t use my overhead tennis Power Serve with my barn door size tennis racket without my tennis shoulders and elbow really hurting.”

“I can’t double haul my really heavy fly rod with a heavy rope like fly line and a heavy fly the size of a keeper fish, without my torn rotator cuff elbow really hurting!”

“I can’t throw a ball or pitch hard like I could in my 20’s without hurting!”

His response to these patients, who kept hurting themselves was simple, “Don’t Do that anymore!”. “Be sure to pay your bill on your way out!”

If they asked what he recommended, he would say, “I just recommended that you not do that anymore, have a good day, don’t do that any more, and pay your bill on the way out!”

Thanks for your reply based on reality:

"At the time nobody was talking about quarantine of 21 days for all the staff who see a patient . Who the hell wants to be imprisoned in the hospital for the duration of time of treatment PLUS 21 days? To minimize exposure of other staff, you can bet they will work those exposed like dogs, and probably give them any new patients that come in. You could end up trapped for months. No thanks."

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

It sounds like that hospital is not ready, like the hospital in Dallas was not ready.

Shouldn’t they be trained on infectious disease control? Shouldn’t they have drills on it?

Just because we know there is an Ebola outbreak, and that there is a real (but small) chance an Ebola patient could show up anywhere, does not mean that this is the only time hospitals should be prepared for a highly infectious and pathogenic disease. The fact is, people can bring a highly infectious and pathogenic exotic disease into any hospital at any time. It happens, and will keep happening, unless we stop worldwide travel.

I hate to say it, but it is NOT a strong argument for state’s rights and autonomy when private and state hospitals are incapable of caring for a patient with such a disease unless the experts from the federal government come to take care of things for them. It’s just like Katrina and New Orleans again.

Yeh I don’t blame them. These nurses are not trained CDC Ebola experts. Not that the CDC is looking too expert at the moment anyway,. I wouldn’t go near those patients.

I am a retired RN and my father interned at Bellevue and both my sister and brother in law graduated from Bellevue nursing school. Bellevue nurses are some of the most highly trained because everything that passes thru NYC end up at Bellevue. You can not make me believe that the hospital is unprepared. They are prepared for everything and have seen everything.

ps why doesn’t anyone comment on how awkwardly he is hugging that young woman.

No nurses called in at the hospital in Dallas.

That's because these nurses learned what happened to those nurses.

You have hit the nail on the head. Using the hospital untrained nurses as ebola workers is insane.
