Researchers create harness that translates body language of dogs

RALEIGH, N.C., - North Carolina researchers said they have created a dog harness outfitted with technology designed to ease interspecies communication with canines.

The North Carolina State University team said the harness includes technologies aimed at interpreting the body language signals used by dogs, as well as technologies designed to translate human language into signals the dogs will understand.

"We have a fully functional prototype, but we'll be refining the design as we explore more and more applications for the platform," said Dr. David Roberts, an assistant professor of computer science at the school and co-author of a paper on the team's work.*

The harness also bears temperature and heart-rate sensors that can give users information about the dog's emotional state, which can be useful in analyzing the stress levels of guide dogs and other service animals.

"This can help handlers identify and mitigate stress for the dogs, improving the length and quality of a dog's life," said Sean Mealin, a Ph.D. student and co-author of the paper. "It's an important issue. Particularly because guide dogs are bred and trained not to display signs of stress in their behavior."

The team said the technology could also have applications for search-and-rescue dogs with additional sensors to detect environmental factors such as gas leaks.

Dogs are easy to understand.

If they invent a contraption that does this for a cat...it will be a money maker.

They built a cat harness too, but the only thing it ever said was “Get this fricking thing off of me!”

What is he trying to say in this sequence? Maybe if he had one of these harnesses, I could finally figure it out. :-)

Sounds like fun! I just hope she doesn’t end up frustrated trying to herd the cats. Talk about a no win situation!

It probably didn’t make it because it lacked 2 crucial buttons...One that says “today I love you sooo much” and one that says “today I hate your guts...go play in the traffic”. :)

" Many animals are self aware and are able to think and plan. I only have experience with dogs, cats and horses, but I’m sure other species have the ability to reason."

How would you even know that? Show me proof. Sorry, there is only one sentient being on this rock, and it is human beings.

Yes, I get that certain breeds of dogs are warm and have what we call love, I call it attachment.

Understand, I just lost my little snuggly Chi-chi after 8 years to cancer. She was the cutest most loving dog I've ever known and I'm just now getting over her death. Again, that is me putting my human emotions on her. They are dogs, they simply don't know they exist. They don't know of a future but only the present and how they are treated in the past. That's called conditioning which is a similar human response called training.

If I had the resources, I would take every doggie out of the pound and give it what it does recognized - human attention.

I can’t show you proof. I’m not a researcher. I just know from decades of experience. I have seen many animals plan actions and follow through on them. I’ve also know animals that were dumber than rocks. I can’t prove God exists either. I just know He does from experience.

My poochies are super smart..Nemo is a Pomeranian/Maltese mix and he can look at me and depending on what Im wearing, guess if Im going anywhere(And of course if Im going to take him with me) he knows what it means when I touch the harness, he puts his ears up and just has that look..of course both boys are obsessed with food(What dog isn’t) and Nemo is a Republican, Yep I did it, my pooch is a Conservative, whenever he hears Obama on TV he barks, and not just a ordinary bark, a pissed off bark..so I have taught my boys well
