HOMESTEAD, Fla. — In addition to the championship, other drivers were battling for position in the final standings Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Finishing in the top 10 in the Sprint Cup standings, and even the top 20 or top 25, can be significant for many drivers.

But this year, there was an intriguing battle for 27th: between boyfriend and girlfriend.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., with a 22nd-place finish in the season finale, finished 27th in the final standings, 22 points ahead of girlfriend Danica Patrick.

But wait. That edge might be short-lived. NASCAR is expected to penalize Stenhouse after confiscating rear suspension parts from his car during pre-qualifying inspection Friday, and it could be as many as 50 points.

Patrick finished 27th in her rookie season, so finishing 27th this year would at least look a little better.

“It is a long year for everyone, but we improved in a lot of areas,” Patrick said.

There is no extra bonus money for 27th or 28th. NASCAR pays season-ending bonus money to the top 25.

Tony Stewart finished 25th in the standings by 17 points over Casey Mears.

Here are some other notable finishes:

— Brad Kesleowski finished fifth, the highest among the non-championship contenders. He finished with a 13-ponit edge on Jeff Gordon. Both were eliminated from title contention in Round 3 of the Chase.

— Kyle Busch finished 10th in the standings, one spot ahead of Jimmie Johnson, whose 11th-place finish is the worst of his career. But the top-10 doesn’t mean what it once did. Only eight drivers will give speeches at the banquet, with the tentative plan of having the other eight on stage in groups answering questions. Who finished eighth? Dale Earnhardt Jr., by 13 points over Carl Edwards.

Found this while looking around for info on the Stenhouse Rearend penalty

The cheaters they had in the old days make the cheaters we have now look pathetic.

Smokey Yunick was the king of fuel capacity cheating...when NASCAR announced a maximum fuel tank size, Smokey built a tank with an inflated basketball in it. After he got through tech he let the air out. When NASCAR changed the rules to ban that, he bought a two-inch fire hose, cut off eleven feet of it and crimped ends onto it. Then NASCAR mandated half-inch fuel line but didn't state the maximum length, so Smokey put a 100-foot roll of fuel line into his car. Even Smokey takes a bow to King Richard: when Petty realized the rulebook didn't specify fuel line routing, he "ran his fuel line through the frame rails to protect it." In reality, he put fittings ON the frame and filled the entire frame of his car with gasoline. (He got caught when he made one fewer pit stop than anyone else.) I don't remember which driver it was, but someone in the late 1960s installed an early version of throttle-body fuel injection under his carburetor. NASCAR took his car to tech inspection, confiscated his oversized carburetor and gas tank (which was way oversized), didn't find the fuel injector, and charged him with 36 violations of the rulebook; he started the car WITH THE CARB AND GAS TANK SITTING ON THE BENCH, told them to charge him with a 37th violation, and drove back to his hauler. Ricky Rudd invented the rubber spoiler; it laid flat in the airflow down the backstretch where spoilers slow you down, and popped up when you let off the gas for the turns. (This is why a NASCAR tech inspector to this very day goes out in pit road and puts a weight on the winner's spoiler before he is allowed to turn into Victory Lane.) And Robin Pemberton invented so many new ways to cheat when he was Rusty Wallace's crew chief they finally hired him as competition director of NASCAR to get him to stop. Compared to the great cheaters of the past, you have to admit that getting busted for a spring being mounted a quarter-inch too far back is pretty lame.

Right now, Smokey is looking down upon us going, "he got fined fifty thousand dollars for THAT? What is this world coming to?"

I’m curious to see how they treat KH after what was done to BK. NASCAR treated BK like dirt as did the media.

Jules Bianchi Latest Update: Driver's Family Issues New Statement Saying He Remains Critical But Stable

November 7, 2014 2:25 PM EST

It has now been a full month since the horrific crash at the Japanese Grand Prix that sent Marussia Formula One Team driver Jules Bianchi to the hospital on October 5. He has since undergone surgery on his brain due to the massive head trauma that he suffered. His family has released a new statement through the Marussia Formula Team to give update son his condition.

Marussia Formula One driver Jules Bianchi of France speaks to the media after a news conference at the Suzuka circuit October 2, 2014. French driver Bianchi was taken to hospital after being seriously injured in a crash that brought a halt to a wet Japanese Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday. Picture taken October 2, 2014.

"His condition continues to be classified by the medical professionals here as critical but stable." The statement began. It may be remembered that the initial statement released by the family gave the same report four weeks ago. They stated that the injured driver is still at the Mie Genera Hospital in Yokkaichi Japan, close to the Suzuka Formula One Racing Circuit.

The statement also said that while there is no big development to report about Bianchi's condition, the family members feel that they owe it to the public to issue a statement to show their appreciation of the outpouring support. It also said that despite having plans about any further treatment for Bianchi, they have decided to keep him at the medical facility in Yokkaichi for the mean time.

The family has already previously praised the medical team in Japan for their excellent work. Specialists had been brought in from Europe in order to possibly facilitate a transition of the drivers' care should he be moved back to Europe. However, the latest statement made it clear that he will remain in Japan for the time being.

While the driver's condition remains stable, his father had earlier stated that his son is in a desperate situation. He also shared that they are in constant fear that a call will come in telling them the dreadful news that he had given up the fight. However, he also stated that his son is continuing the fight albeit with little progress to speak of.

The Marussia F1 team ran only one car during the inaugural Russian Grand Prix in Sochi. Unfortunately, despite the team's efforts to continue fighting on the track, they were forced to miss the USA Grand Prix last week as well as the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend due to financial reasons. It remains to be seen if the team will come back for the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi later this month.
