I want a pistol. (Vanity)

Title pretty much sums it up.

Interested in one I can secure in my glovebox, if I feel the need. and keep at home to "discourage" anyone who may want to do us harm.

In the military I was used to a 9mm and back in the day a .45.

Will look for a concealed carry weapon later.

What does y'all suggest?

Many thanks!

Instead of the glove box, you may want to mount an under dash holster. I’d recommend either a .40 S&W or .45 APC with a short barrel length since you are in the confines of a vehicle (smaller is better in this case) and an extended magazine as an add on. Practice/test with the mag that comes with the weapon and see how that works with your vehicle, If you get an extended mag, practice with that and see if you have any snags. If that doesn’t work, you can go back to the standard mag.

Find a full size pistol or revolver that feels comfortable in your hand. Since you are not carrying it full time you can go with a larger caliber in Semi-Automatic, so 45acp is very nice and impressive. Ruger, Smith and Wesson, Sig Sauer Springfield,Kahr and Kimber all make great pistols. With a revolver, 357mag, 44 special, 45LC are all very good but a .357mag gives you the option of shooting the softer recoiling .38special. Look to Ruger, and Smith to provide you with a nice revolver.

A clip under the dash is handy. I would never reach for the glovebox for my “papers” because just making that move is excuse for a cop to notch his handle. I would tell the officer that my paper is in the glovebox and let him go from there. Once I told the officer that he had that already when he looked on his screen before he put his light on because he had already run my tag number. They have sensors that do that automatically when they get behind you. The cop said, well yes, and didn’t make me get the papers out.

I have quite a few pistols. Multiple Berettas, Glocks, 1911s, Brownings, - even some of the hard to get (PMR 30 and Ruger SR1911 Govt. and commanders).

Frankly, If I wanted a glove box gun that I had a CCW license for, it would be a S&W Model 625 45 ACP. I’ve got one (my other I gave to my daughter who hounded me until I gave her my first one).

No FTFs, no FTEs, Stovepipes, KBs, no nothing but 100% out-the-barrel bullet.

Kahr Arms is basically run by the Moonies. I assume you would want to avoid their products.

Lots of different ammo choices available in 9mm.

Any good .45 or .9mm will do the job. I suggest a revolver rather than a pistol for non-concealed carry self defense and home defense. If it misfires, all you have to do is pull the trigger again. I like a .357 model. They shoot both .38 special and .357 ammo and come in a huge variety of sizes and shapes.

If you can afford it, a shotgun is better at home and cheaper than most handguns.

In my state, Georgia, a citizen is NOT required to tell an officer there is a weapon in the car if he has a Weapons Carry License.

Nor is there any reason for an officer to ask for anything beyond your driver’s license which should be on your person. Proof of Insurance (even emissions compliance) and registrations are something they have the ability to check on via their patrol data systems by way of your tag number.

Springfield XD, but then I’m a BIG guy with BIG hands. My wife says that’s a problem for her, cause she doesn’t like it as she’s half my size.

If concealed carry is not a concern yet (it should be) then I suggest the Beretta FS-92. Very similar to the 9mm you probably carried in the military (Thanks for your service!).

To cover both needs, I would suggest the Ruger LC9. A dandy small platform 9mm...great for concealed carry. Very nice indeed. I carry one everyday.

What ever u buy, make sure it’s a 9mm ACP. You can get RIP ammo and its deadly. One shot is all it takes.

With respect, please ask and answer these questions:
1. How familiar with firearms?
2. Why do I want one?
3. Will I get a CC permit?
4. Will I commit to practice?

Revolvers are less complicated than semi-automatics. My CC is a Ruger LCP 380. L(light) C(concealed) P(pistol). I carry it in a bulldog holster made just for it ($20). It clips right on my seat belt when I’m driving and I can remove it easily and clip it to my belt when I leave the truck.

A lot of gun ranges have weapons to rent, narrow down what u r looking for and see if u can find a place that has them so you can shoot at least 50 - 100 rounds through.....(kinda like test driving a car). Last thing you want is to own a weapon your not comfortable with.....just my 2 cent. Good luck.

I like my Ruger LCR.38 as my ‘oops...dey it is.’ gun when carrying concealed. At home my S&W.38 Combat Masterpiece (4” barrel”) and the Mossberg pump action shotgun suffice for me. Not a thing wrong with automatics; personal preference for revolvers.

I suggest you stick with the 9mm. The practice ammo is cheaper than higher calibers and you want to be able to afford a lot of practice. For real world use I suggest using a good Home Defense round. The 9mm has little recoil and getting back on target is much quicker. Which 9mm you get is up to your budget and personal taste. If you are rich then get a Wilson, if you are like me then try a Springfield, Glock, or Sig. They all pretty much do the same thing and with the same reliability, that is to send a hunk of metal speeding toward something intending on doing you harm.
