Oregon police dog ‘Cash’ fired for poor performance

A Belgian Malinois trained to be the ninth member of a Cannon Beach, Oregon, police force has been given the boot, evidently unfit for the field of law enforcement.

Two-year-old “Cash” was dismissed before he even got to see action, The Associated Press reported.

Among his many faults: He was afraid of heights. He had barking difficulties. And he startled at the slightest of noises, AP reported. On top of that, he couldn’t perform one of his key roles — jumping into high spots, like counters, to sniff out drugs.

Instead, he’d just start barking, police said.

“[Barking is] fine as an alert, but you can’t get anything done when you’re trying to get him to find dope and he’s just barking in your face,” said Officer Josh Gregory, the dog’s former handler, in an interview with the Daily Astorian.

I hate the way we discard beautiful animals ‘just because’. Cash may
not be suited for police work, but he deserves a great home.

“A Belgian Malinois trained to be the ninth member of a Cannon Beach, Oregon, police force has been given the boot, evidently unfit for the field of law enforcement.”

Try reading this line again and note that the dog was being added as the 9th member of the entire force, i.e. prior to the dog joining them, there were a total of 8 sworn officers, likely humans. Cash was to be the 9th member and just happened to be a K-9.

Pretty brazen name.

Not “Justice.” Not “Safety.” Not “Backup.”

“Cash.”

M’kay, that’s clear enough.

I don’t understand this. How does a dog “graduate” from this type of training program and they not know this about his temperament and/or lack of training?

He’s a Mal.

They come in all degrees of color concentrations, now.

Probably some Euro blood popping out.

One of my Dobes is pure Euro and the rust markings on her face are so dark, her face looks black in dim light.

Perfectly acceptable, just different from what most are used to.

He has the same smiley, happy, bright-eyed, slightly "goofy" look that my younger German Shorthair exhibits. Our older one is more "all business" and hard-headed. The little one is just a love-bug who is so eager to please that a slightly raised voice will have her crawling on my lap to beg forgiveness.

She also "talks" a lot...all kinds of noises. She seems to have this need at least once a day to just bark for no reason. She knows that we don't like it, so now spends five minutes barking into a pillow to muffle the noise...I kid you not...LOL! Total goofball.

I love GSH and GWH, too.

Such great dogs who go far beyond the usual, single-minded “huntin’ dog” stereotype.

Had one, once, named Schatzi.

And nope, I didn’t name her.

:)

We named ours after WWII B17’s...the older one is Memphis Belle; the younger is Heidi Ho. I have a rather bizarre sense of humor (both of those planes bombed Germany).

LOL!

Yup, that’s rubbing their nose in it.

My first was named Caesar and my second, Tito.
[didn’t name the second one, myself]

Never knew if his previous owner was a fan of the Jacksons or the Japanese emperor.

:)

He was long before I knew you could change a dog’s name to something less weird and they would not mind.

Someone screwed up on this one. A dog that is scared of noises, etc, in other words bad nerves should never have even started training, should have been culled as a puppy.

I thought the same thing, his head says ‘German Shepherd”, not malinois. He is a GSD/mali cross.
