I am writing in response to Kurt Miller's Nov. 22 guest column, in which he states that "white privilege is a racist term."
The definition of white privilege I use is from Dr. Beverly Tatum, who writes, "White people ... sometimes struggle with the concept of white privilege. What are the benefits or the advantages to being white in a society that has historically given benefits and advantages to members of the dominant group? If you are a person who has that privilege, you don't necessarily notice it."
I'd like to think I have earned everything I have through my hard work. However, I must acknowledge that my skin color — white — has provided my white ancestors and me with not just privileges, but cumulative advantages.
White privilege, then, is not a "stereotype," as Miller wishes. It is a fact.
For example, in 1993, I applied for my first professional job as a middle school teacher in rural Pennsylvania and was hired. As I reflect back now, I didn't meet a single person of color during the entire hiring process. The principal was white. Every teacher I met was white. The superintendent was white, as was the entire school board.

Even if there is such a thing as “white privilege” it is something so ephemeral and diffuse that no one can actually put their finger on it or actually do anything about it. It’s a will o’the wisp.
In truth, “white privilege” seems like little more than liberal angst. Life is so unfair! Oh poor me.

Let’s talk about Black Privilege.
You know the special status they have under illegal, idiotic hate crimes laws.
You know, the special status that they perform so many crimes as juveniles people are seriously advocating not to prosecute them for doing it.
You know for their ability to play the knockout game on whites and others and get away with it.
You know the privilege of holding racist attitudes towards others but being taught bullsh1t that they can’t be racist.
You know the privilege of being able to be thugs with serious rap sheets that when, stopped during an attack, their parents and black racebaiters paint them as innocent angels and gentle giants, despite the large amount of facts known about the thug punks.
White Privilege is a Black construct. Or, in the vernacular “It’s a black thang.”
