Vanity: Need Advice on CA Health Insurance
Obama is the source of my problems ^ | 11/30/14 | Self

Posted on 11/30/2014 10:47:47 AM PST by Yaelle

I was a part of my family member's business, and as an employee of this small family business was able to get myself and 4 kids covered by a private insurance company with a great ppo plan though pricy. Every year, this coverage grew more expensive by a couple hundred a month, until this year when it has gone up by $500 a month. I can't afford it and the business will be closing in 2015.

I don't want to join CA Covered because it's ObamaCare. What do any CA FReepers do for insurance when they aren't getting it paid for through a company?

I am supposed to pay $2500 a month for 5 people. I just can't do this.

Can anyone offer some advice: how to not go to places like Kaiser but not break the bank either? I need to make the change now.

My family physician, who was only 56, closed his practice this year because of the cost to computerize his office and the reduce reimbursement cost. I am afraid we are going to see a lot of this. It will be hard to get students to go into medicine when student loans cost will be above 6 figures and income will be significantly less.

For most insurers, the provider network for Covered Cal policies is not the same as the network for group policies. So just the company name and history isn’t much of a guide to whether the network will be large or tiny.

A couple years ago, we closed our practice of 16 fulltime docs and retired several years early because of nobamacare looming. We haven’t looked back. Retired and loving every second.

Thank you.

Is that a state law requirement?

I really wish you and your family the best of health and good luck.Health care and its environs is a mine field.
Perhaps you can somehow work with your Drs’ on some type of fee based care.

George W Bush is the one who pushed for the computerized charting, one of the reason I don’t think to much of him.

It is a requirement in all states. I am not sure if the feds started this rule, but everyone abides by by state licensure rules in all states . Deviation of that could cause lawsuits and loss of license.

He has a family and things happen. We’ve had so many unexpected events: twins, sick twins (over 250,000 of expenses), cancer, epilepsy.

We just buy insurance and plan for maximum out of pocket.

Computerized charting is one way the government can snoop on you. Just like the NSA and TSA. Never be honest regarding anything that could be used against you by the government.

I left Kaiser over their bureaucratic structure, but during the time I was there, I also made the discovery about the necessity of learning how to play their system. In my experience, locating a friendly nurse was really helpful. I needed minor surgery to remove a skin tag that was being irritated by clothing... they quoted me a 6 month wait. Upon hearing this, the nurse said, “I’ll bet you didn’t mention the redness you’re getting, call them back and make sure you use the word ‘redness’.” I did, and they asked when I’d like to come in. Redness was on their protocol for emergency treatment, normal removal wasn’t. If you didn’t know that, you got sent to the back of the line. Having her as a guide through the system really helped.

I was also fond of their 24 hour walk-in primary care clinic.

It’s worth mentioning, though, that (unless they’ve changed their policy) they require their patients to agree to binding arbitration. One of the ways they keep costs down is that they don’t lose a lot of lawsuits.

You can buy your own insurance.. The only good part of obamacare is that people with pre-existing conditions can now buy insurance.

The pre existing issue only applies to insurance plans purchased through obamacare. Individual plans purchased outside of obamacare are not subject to the pre existing clause.

Ok, up thread, there was another one of these! I love these ideas. I think maybe the reasons Jews aren’t doing this is because they all have family members in the med business. My dad would have loved it though; he loved his practice but hated the insurance BS.

All individual plans are now and governed by obamacare, whether you buy them directly from an insurance company, or a state exchange. It is one of several reason that you can;t get reasonably priced insurance anymore. My premium is up threefold over 4 years ago, for a substantially worse plan (higher deductible).

I went to the covered CA site, and pretty soon they started asking all kinds of questions and background checks etc. I have “nothing to hide” but I’d rather just tell the insurance co itself than the government. I’d like to think that the insurance co only cares about how any of the info will affect THEM. I do not trust the government not to use info they get in one place in another place entirely.

How to check out ObamaCare prices, MrShoop? Did you feel squicked giving them all that personal info or am I being too paranoid?

Ya, be careful giving coveredca your contact info, or they'll be calling you at night trying to get you signed up.

You can preview the plans, prices, and benefits on the site by going to this page: http://www.coveredca.com/shopandcompare/#calculator

You have to supply your zipcode because plans vary by county, and the reason they ask for income is to see if qualify for a subsidy. You can contact the insurance company directly once you decide.

Why two years?

The SC ruling on subsidies will come out in June. That should destroy Obamacare all by itself.

“What a great idea, but I believe you have to be Christian.”

I would be surprised if that were true.

I am a born again evangelical Christian, we believe that Christianity is a personal relationship with God through Christ, as such, there is no membership card, secret handshake or special mark separating a Christian from every other member of the human tribe.

I suspect if you reach out to the organization, there will be discussions about issues of morality and values, not what makes you a Christian, there is great debate within the Christian family about that and an organization is going to avoid that like the plague.

If you have to declare yourself a Christian when you in fact are not one, I would consider that a personal moral issue and deal with it as such. If not, unless you have moral issues with associating with Christians you will probably be fine.

Now for your other problems. I am not an expert on Obama care but the following is true to the best of my understanding. If you do not choose Obamacare during open enrollment, you cannot get it until the next open enrollment meaning you may not be able to get a policy regardless of how much cash you have, except for cases of job loss etc. Obamacare is not a policy, it is a network of rules regulating who can provide insurance and when you can buy it so there is really no escape, even your non Obamacare policy is actually part of the system, and the price increases are a way of Obamacare regulating your choices. Unless you are part of a group that has bribed their way out that is.

Good luck, I hope you have some options, you may be stuck with your current policy or not coverage until the next open enrollment. You may be forced to change employment to even have the privilege of buying insurance with your own money. Freedom is great isn’t it.

Because it will take 2 years to unravel it. People who signed up, tax forms, so many cancerous tendrils ... think of removing medicare. It will take as long as it took to create this abomination.

I just wish we had people of character to stop the Ponzi scheme of Social Security. Anyone younger that 50 YO will never see a dime of it.
