My High School-aged son brought home a flyer regarding a group at his school called the FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) Club and that there are dues required to to join. Do any of my fellow Freepers have any experience with this club/organization? In reading info about them at their website, I admit to the attractiveness of their motto and purpose but I also admit to being a little incredulous - that a Dept. of Ed backed program really cares about "family" and not just another avenue of indoctrination. Your feedback would be appreciated.
That group was formerly known as the Future Homemakers of America. That’s really all I know about them.

Yep, took me to the same place my research took me (Click on “Vanity” under my title and it takes you to their “About” page). I can read Google links all day long but I am wanting to know about anyone’s experiences with the group.

- to provide opportunities for personal development and preparation for adult life
- to strengthen the function of the family as a basic unit of society
- to encourage democracy through cooperative action in the home and community
- to encourage individual and group involvement in helping achieve global cooperation and harmony
- to promote greater understanding between youth and adults
- to provide opportunities for making decisions and for assuming responsibilities.
- to prepare for the multiple roles of men and women in today's society
- to promote Family and Consumer Sciences and related occupations
My take: half sounds good the other half is progressive bull crap. By the way, there once was a line of thought that Home Economics was a bunch a liberal mumbo jumbo and that any real mom would teach her daughter correctly.
My discovery of this and discussions with community members (with kids in the school) has started a rasher of crap and 14 families are committed to pulling their kids out next year and cyber schooling
Seems the club meets once a month for a half hour and a teacher is a paid monitor (watch, don't interfere ... supposedly)
ANYthing that has to do with a student "club" is suspect in my opinion.
Now, as a disclaimer ... I'm not saying the FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) is bad or good .... just ... watch and research.

BTW ... if you go to the GSA site, you'll see it's nothing more than a political action committee/group/information board

OF COURSE I took occasion to publicly ask what they meant by that and the explanation was that they (school board association) was trying to make a better world for our kids to which I replied,
Then you've got it backwards .... we should concentrate on improving our children for the world if we want to see the world improved
Silence ... all eyes on me ... and the guys up front said that was a good point .. and moved along
After the seminar they asked to speak with me and both gave me their card and asked that if I had any questions to call or e-mail
Ain't gonn'a ... but the school board is a commie organization ... in my opinion.
My daughters have been in it. It has been a great experience for them. They’ve placed at state for their presentations. My one daughter is currently doing a presentation on abortion (i.e., pro-life). I warned her she will have critics, and to be prepared, but she’s been encouraged by those in charge, so it’s been a good thing.
As with anything a lot will depend on the type of person who runs the club. the club sponsor at the high school I teach at is a conservative christian who I wouldn't be surprised to find on this forum, our club is great.
The last sponsor left a couple of years ago which was also great; she was an 0bamatron who had a Hillary 2016 sticker on her car right after the 2012 election.
I can’t speak for other schools or other districts. Here in Southern Virginia it is a solid organization. They have competitions at the local, state, and National level. They involve developing budgets, Job seeking/ Resume making, current domestic issues such as taxes and mortgages. They work with the kids on developing good eating habits and label awareness. In our district they beat the hell out of that kids need two parents, one of each gender.
My sone was an officer in his high school FCCLA. He got a $1000 scholarship towards college from them.
I think FBLA is the other club that is good for HS kids. That’s future Business Leaders. Also a scholarship opportunity.
I am the advisor for the TSA Technology Student Association and I work very closely with the FFA Future Farmers of America. Both of these groups do an amazing amount of work preparing kids for future opportunities.
But my local high school is rural, mostly Republican with a libertarian bent. Our school has a trap shooting team--the horrors! Their picture is in the yearbook holding guns. The horrors!
At least in my area, I would have no problem if my son joined the local group of FCCLA.
