"I was shocked to find that my $4.30 daily latte was costing me over $1,200 a year," says Ashley Feinstein, a certified money coach based in New York.

I understand that. (I’m cheap enough, though, just a year at a time does it!)

Have never had cable. Bought a good indoor antennae for $45 and got about 10 stations...up from 7. One day it fell over and I got 4 more stations. So there it lies? lays?...whatever!

I don't know what a "certified money coach" is, but the "certification" apparently doesn't require any math skils.

Exactly - they must get their narratives from Obama's teleprompter, "Well, if you just pick something to deny yourself of, you'll save, like lots of money. Do it several times and you'll be like rolling in the dough. If you do the math, you'll discover that I haven't a clue of what I'm talking about."

EEEGADS! How can modern man/woman survive without LATTE!!!??

I still mix hot water with Nescafe instant, takes less time and is served hot. By the time all these esoteric coffees make it to my table or hand, it's not hot enough...

It always puzzled me how many of the lowest paid staff in my office bought Starbucks and bought their lunches. I was always acutely aware of the annualized cost of any routine purchase and how long I would have to work to buy something. Perhaps that is why I was the Company Treasurer.

My bank has a poster on the wall detailing how much money you can save per year by not buying that expensive cup of coffee.

For a 5 day work week it’s over $1,000 per year.

And if you go to Starbucks you’re getting burnt coffee anyway.

I just got up and my fingers were still asleep so it was a hard read. The guy was famous here for being so cheap, he’d make the buffalo on a nickel scream from being pinched so hard. BTW, did know Berks Co., PA is the place that invented copper wire? Yeah, it was two of these damned Dutchies fighting over a penny!

While I'm not against saving money on needless items, what all these Grand Savers miss is the fact that it's nice to live life while you're living.

Forgoing certain daily pleasures for a deferred grand pleasure is sometimes necessary. But giving up all daily pleasures for the one big pleasure can have a deflating effect if The Big Pleasure turns out to be a dud.

carpooling

Just doesn't work for most people. You have to

  1. Start from approximately the same place
  2. Start at the same time
  3. Go to the same place
  4. Leave at the same time
In my entire career I have never found anyone else that met those criteria.

Cutting cable? Never had it

expensive coffee. Don't do that either.

Conclusion?

When it comes to retirement time, the government will see 1x persons who have scrimped and saved for retirement and 10x persons who have nothing saved for retirement because they have indulged themselves with a daily $4 latte, $15 bought lunches, $200/month mobile phone bills, etc. Those government officials will then happily sacrifice the 1x population for the 10x votes by labeling the 1x population as selfish and not providing their fair share. Look for the government to simply confiscate savings of the 1x.

Cellular phone bills, wireless/cable communications costs in general, have impoverished a huge segment of our society. And what great things are being communicated? Mostly BS.

Not long ago you had just a $30/mo phone bill + long distance. Now there is cable, data, voice and cellular. Wages didn't go up to support that cost.

I love going out to eat, so we do it often but I also have no interest in going on vacation. I have many friends who scrimp all year and then spend $1000s for one week of family vacation. I would rather go out to eat a couple of times a week and have a relaxing meal with family or friends. It does help that I live in FL and feel like I am on a staycation most of the time.

Plus consider that in my case, I have three kids whose activities take up the bulk of my time not spent at work - I'm not complaining about it, but my commute, as annoying as it can be at times, is the one bit of "me time" I can consistently count on, and listening to the music, audiobook, or podcast of my choice in the process just seals that deal.

Agreed. When my children were small, the commute was my “me” time - I didn’t even turn on the radio. I was invited several times to car pool, and it would have saved some money. But I needed that 20+ minutes of quiet time.

How many calories are in a cup of milk? Because the calories in the coffee are negligible.

On the overall subject, I bought a small pile of quality hardware - espresso machine, two bean grinders, and a specialty milk frother/heater - for about the annual price discussed, about 5 years ago. I make two lattes most mornings. I’m way ahead of the game, both vs. the raw cost at Starbucks or the like, and because I don’t have to go to Starbucks, I just go to the kitchen.
