There is much speculation into the mind of Judas. But it is possible that he was expecting Messiah to forcefully change the power structure in Judas's world. When it became apparent that Jesus was not going to sweep away the Roman rule, perhaps Judas thought he could force Jesus to act as he Judas expected by betraying him into Roman hands. It might explain the subsequent acts of Judas as he realized he had betrayed someone whom he admired, albeit in a wrong framework.

BTW, prior to the Resurrection there were no 'Christians, only devout Jews following their Messiah. Do you know (because I do not know the answer) whether Judas hanged himself before or after the resurrection? What a tragic ending if he did it before the resurrection, because if he had waited until the resurrection perhaps Jesus would have dealt with him similarly as He dealt with Peter and Thomas. But it is all just speculation ...

i always looked at the Apostles as the 1st Christians, literally a Follower of Christ

i had always assumed(i know a VERY bad thing to do) he hanged himself pretty much right after Christ was taken away, why i think that i really don't know, so whether he knew of the Resurrection or not is an excellent question
